It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, Mary Catherine Currie, age 82 on Saturday, May 14, 2016 at the Glace Bay Hospital.
Born in Glace Bay, Mary was the daughter of the late Joseph and Margaret (Marsh) Vickers.
Mary was employed in the laundry department at the old Glace Bay General Hospital. She was a devoted, compassionate and loving mother and grandmother. A quiet and private lady by nature, Mary enjoyed reading, knitting and spending time with her cat, Princess.
Mary is survived by her two children, her daughter, Debbie (George) and her son, Ronald ‘Boo’ (Shirley); three beloved grandchildren, Brianna, Kristen, Jillian; three sisters, Joyce (Russell), Valerie (Gerard), Janie; brother, Gordie and her sister-in-law and best friend, Cecilia.
Mary also took on the role of raising her nieces and nephews; whom she regarded as her own children, Theresa ‘Sparkles’, Marion and her two nephews, who have since passed on, Bruce and Tommy.
Besides her parents, Mary was predeceased by her husband, Sonny Currie; three brothers, Tommy, Joey, Freddie; two sisters, Frances, Isabelle and her sister-in-law, Ruth Stevens.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 12 (noon) until the time of the funeral service at 2 p.m., all in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Interment in St. Anne’s Cemetery. Fr. Leo Boone presiding.
