Selma Carlson Payne (nee Penney)

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of a very special person, Selma Carlson (Penney) Payne. Selma is predeceased by her parents Clement and Myra Penney and grandson Kenny Simms. Selma is survived by her loving husband of 54 years, Archbishop Stewart Payne; her children: Carla Adams, Chris (Lana) Payne, Robert (Denise) Payne, Angela (Kenny) Ford and chosen daughter Veronica (Scott) Cull; grandchildren: Stefany, Ben, Liam, Jake and Elyse Adams, Scott and Matthew Payne, Alexandra and Andrew Payne, Dylan, Steven and Laura Ford, Robert and Kathy Cull; great-grandchild Lydia Adams; her siblings: Thomas (Olive) Penney, Roy Penney and Paul (Rebecca) Penney; and a large number of nieces, nephews and friends. Selma trained as a teacher at Memorial University and the University of Toronto and taught school in Port Union, St. Anthony, North West River and St. John's, NL before we were married and substituted in a number of places during our Parish Ministries. Selma contributed greatly to family, church and community life. She was always a great role model and always thought of others before herself. Visitation will take place on Thursday, May 19 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. from Fillatre's Funeral Home, 4 St. Mark's Avenue. The funeral service will be held at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, Main Street, Corner Brook on Friday, May 20 at 2 p.m. with The Very Rev. Baxter Park officiating assisted by Archbishop Percy Coffin and Bishop David Torraville. The family extends a heartfelt thank you to Dr. Westby and the nursing staff at the Long Term Care Home in Corner Brook. Their professionalism was always tempered with much compassion and loving care. Many, many thanks. Donations in memory of Selma may be made to the Cathedral Choir Fund.
