McLeod, Sheila Wyness  
Sheila Wyness (Smith) McLeod passed away peacefully at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital in Fredericton, NB on May 19th, 2016 surrounded by her family. Born on March 4, 1932 in Montreal, QC, she was the daughter of the late Thomas George Smith and Beatrice Annie (Leach) Smith.
She is survived by her children Dr. Bruce McLeod (Dr. Lois Bowden) of Port Williams, NS; Tom McLeod (Zaida Ahmad) of Auckland, New Zealand; Andrew McLeod (Monique) of Fredericton, NB and Diane McLeod (Kevin Bateman) of Philadelphia, PA. She leaves behind 7 grandchildren; Jordan and Marin McLeod, Stuart and Victoria McLeod, Daren McLeod and Alison and Melanie Bateman.  
Raised in Montreal, she graduated from Montreal West High School in 1949 and went onto McGill University where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education and graduated cum laude.  During her time at McGill, she met and later married Robert Gordon McLeod of Saint John, NB in 1956 and they settled in Fredericton, NB. After raising her children, she became a successful businesswoman. She started her career as a real estate agent with VanWart Reality and went on to become the executive director of the Association of Professional Engineers of New Brunswick in 1980. In 2008 she was awarded an Honourary Fellowship of Engineers Canada. In 1988 she co-owned nine Nutrisystem franchises before retiring from the business world in 1991. After retiring, she travelled extensively worldwide.
Sheila was very active in sports and passionate about her community and numerous charitable organizations.  She was an accomplished curler and skipped her team to two consecutive provincial curling championships in 1972 and 1973. She volunteered with the YM/YWCA and in 1972 she became their first female president. She was also the first female to lead the United Way of Fredericton. She was the consummate organizer and throughout her years she served her community on various Boards and Committees including as president of the ladies sections of the Capital Winter Club, the Fredericton Golf Club, the Fredericton school board, the Fredericton Mental Health Association and the New Brunswick Lung Association. She was a champion of women’s issues and served as President of Transition House. She loved to read and enjoyed her position as President of the Friends of the Fredericton Public Library. Sheila was an avid art collector and served in various years as president of the Fredericton Rug Hooking Guild, the Fredericton Fiber Artist Guild and the Fredericton Art Club. She also enjoyed playing bridge and was a Master Bridge player.
Sheila lived a full and happy life and was dearly loved by family and friends. She will be missed by all she served.
We will celebrate her life with a service for family and friends at Wilmot United Church, 473 King Street, Fredericton, NB, on Wednesday May 25, 2016 at 3 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to APEGNB Foundation for Education or to the YMCA of Fredericton, NB. Personal condolences may be emailed to the family at btadmcleod@gmail.com.
