Nicholas 'Nick aka Budge' Benjamin Young

Passed on: May 19th, 2016

We are heartbroken to share the news of the sudden passing of our sweet son, brother and friend, Nick, age 28, who was taken away from us far, far too soon on May 19, 2016.
Nick loved his family deeply and kept them constantly entertained; he was adored in turn by his devoted parents, brothers, sisters, grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. He had an impossibly close group of friends who were the wind in his sails, led by his best friend in all the world, his beloved brother Andrew. Being the youngest of five kids, Nick got off to a bit of a slow start, preferring to always observe for a year or two before trying his hand at things, whether it was talking, playing video games or playing any instrument. Once he began though, he was an instant expert, speaking in full paragraphs when he started, beating teenagers 10 years his senior at the arcade while standing on a milk crate, and somehow drawing unbelievably sweet tunes out of any instrument he took into his great, nimble hands. Nick had a heart of gold that must have occupied his whole body it was so big – he loved deeply and unabashedly, and gave the best hugs in the world. Nick was an “old soul,” wise beyond his years. He was our great protector, always taking care of those he loved. He was the funniest person we knew, and he regularly dazzled us with his brilliant, quick wit. A modest man, he wrote some of the most amazing music that only a few of us were lucky enough to have heard. He was an avid reader and adored movies, TV and music; he loved art and had a collection of unusual objects. He possessed an uncanny ability to recall quotes from any book, movie or TV show and he won any and all quote challenges with his siblings. The music of the universe will likely carry on but will never be quite the same without Nick’s pure spirit and immense talents. There is a giant, Nick-sized hole in our hearts that we will do our best to fill with our many cherished memories of him, but he is and always will be utterly irreplaceable.

Nick is survived by parents, Brian and Nancy (Wilkie) Young; Nana Peggy (Smith) Wilkie; sisters, Jodi ‘Butter’ Reid and Brianne ‘Biggie Shorty’ Young, and brother Andrew ‘Bibi’ Young; siblings “in-love” Doug “Dangerous” Reid, Marc ‘Tingey’ Palmer and Maria ‘Chuha”’ (Paruch) Young; niece Philly ‘Poots’ Reid; Boris Yoda Young; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was predeceased by sister, Carmen Young; nephew, Davy Reid; grandparents, Jim and Julia (Rahey) Young, Ivan Aitkens and Lloyd Wilkie Sr. and Berkley Paul-for-short Young.
Visitation will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Monday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A funeral mass will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph’s Church, North Sydney with Fr. Patrick O’Neill officiating.
Memorial donations can be made to the Carmen Young CBU Nursing Scholarship (available at the funeral home) or the charity of your choice.
