KIELWEIN, KARL
Karl Eugene Kielwein age 84, of Halifax, NS, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on May 19, 2016 at the Halifax Infirmary.
Born on March 7, 1932 in Tubingen, Germany, Karl was a member of the German Police Force for 25 years. During his time as a police officer he also trained to be a pastry chef, a competitive boxer, a motorcycle stuntman, became an avid alpine skier, and did German Shepherd K-9 training.
In 1976 he and his wife Rose moved their entire family to Richibucto, NB to fulfill his dream of living the rest of his life off of his hobbies. He became a sought after hunting and fishing guide bringing many clients to NB from Europe. He worked as a landscape designer, working on numerous large projects including the Woodbine Racetrack in Ontario. He developed a new variety of grape that would grow in the Richibucto area, eventually working as a consultant to help form the Richibucto River Winery. Karl was also a member of the Richibucto Lions Club for many years. He loved to spend his free time gardening, fishing, performing magic tricks, developing new herbal remedies, and playing with his grandkids. In 2014, Karl and Rose moved to Halifax, NS to be closer to family.
Karl was a loyal friend to many people in both Germany and Canada. He is survived by his loving wife of 61+ years Rose, son Karl (Irmgard) of Berneck, Germany, daughter Uta Donahue (Mark) of Hammonds Plains, NS, grandchildren Aaron, Rita, Molly, Amelia and Audrey.
He is predeceased by his parents Karl and Maria, sister Hilda, brother Heinz, and daughter Sonja Bode (Jim).
A celebration of Karl’s life will be held at Melville Heights Seniors Residence (24 Ramsgate Lane, Halifax) on Wednesday May 25 at 2:30pm. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Atlantic Funeral Homes in Sackville, NS. Interment to follow at a later date at Oakridge Memorial Garden.
