Alma Thibault

Passed on: May 24th, 2016

Alma Noel Thibault passed away on May 24, 2016 in Regina, Saskatchewan. She was born on December 30, 1941, in Ladybank, Scotland, the youngest daughter of Robert and Margaret Robertson. She attended school in Ladybank, then Cupar, and nursing school in Edinburgh, where she became a nurse midwife. While visiting her sister Joyce in Canada, she decided to stay, getting a job nursing at the Swift Current Hospital. When a new hospital opened in Ponteix, she and her sister Edna took a job there. Soon she met a young farmer in the area, and in October, 1968, she married Laurent Thibault. This new French Canadian farm life was quite a change from her Scottish roots, but she soon learned the ropes. As a young child during the war, they lived on rations, so she became adept at learning to make do with what you had and figuring things out. Alma and Laurent had 4 children, Laura, Brian, Murray and Kevin. She worked nights at the Ponteix Hospital for many years while raising a young family and helping with farming. Later she switched to working at the Foyer St. Joseph and continued her nursing career there until her retirement. Alma was a lifelong learner. She took many classes, such as sewing, cake decorating, hair cutting, learning French, public speaking, and many more. She was an avid knitter, but also was skilled at crochet, embroidery, needlework and sewing. She was also very musically talented. She could play the piano, guitar, and taught herself the violin, trumpet and drums. She enjoyed many different genres of music, from classical to folk to heavy rock, and could often be heard teaching herself to play Guns & Roses at the piano, or trying to moonwalk like Michael Jackson. She also learned how to use an I-phone and tablet, including Facebook, to stay in touch with people, and enjoyed her most recent technology-her selfie stick. Alma and Laurent were able to enjoy traveling, going to such places as Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii, Mexico, Quebec and Las Vegas, as well as many camping trips in her trailer. She was involved in the community, was a CWL member and served on the Rolling Hills Health Board for many years. Health care was a cause close to her heart, and she worked hard on the health board to ensure good health care for all. In 2003, she was diagnosed with cancer. When this happened, Alma took the advice of her good friend Dionne: for 24 hours, she said "why me?" and then after that she said "why not me?" and got on with her treatments and appointments without any complaint. Whenever cancer came back, she accepted it and was ready to get on with the treatment required. Even when she was very ill taking cancer treatments, she managed to find the strength to knit hats to donate to people at the cancer clinic. She was always cheering people on, encouraging them to fight and never give up. And every year she walked the survivor lap at the Relay for Life, refusing to take a ride. Through it all, she managed to keep her sense of humor, and had many laughs over the years. Cancer, although a terrible disease, was a way to see the true beauty in the world through the kindness, caring and goodness of all the people Alma met throughout her illness, and we, her family, are truly thankful to all of those people. Alma is survived by her children Laura and Barry Cornelson, (Colt Beau and Shane); Brian and Nancy, (Shelby and Jaden); Murray and Danielle, (Amanda and Justin Sherwood (Callie), Brent and Chadd); and Kevin and Carla (Amber, Erica and James). She was very proud of her grandchildren and loved each one dearly. She is also survived by her sisters Joyce and Alex Hattum, and Edna Cyrenne, and her in-laws Claire Schaff, Rita Forget, Marcel and Yvonne Thibault, Helene Burnay, Leo and Yolande Thibault, Patrick and Eunice Thibault, and Irene and Hugh McDonough, as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Laurent, her parents Robert and Margaret Robertson, and her brothers-in-law Raymond Cyrenne, Leo Schaff, Willie Forget, and Roy Burnay. Prayer service was held Thursday May 26 at 7:30, led by Chris and Claude Desautels. Funeral mass was held at Notre Dame d'Auvergne Church in Ponteix at 11:30 am with Father Richard Jasiak MSF officiating. Readings were done by Amanda Sherwood, Shelby Loose and Jaden Loose, and eulogy was read by Nancy Thibault. Organist was Claudette Begin, joined by the church choir and soloist Nicole Hiebert. Urn bearer was Brent Thibault and cross bearer was Beau Cornelson. Honor guard was the CWL. Interment took place at the Ponteix Cemetery. Lunch was held at the Parish Hall with lunch served by the Ponteix Ladies of the Parish. Donations in Alma's memory may be made to the Allan Blair Cancer Clinic in Regina, or the Regina Cancer Patient Lodge. Lemieux Funeral Home, Ponteix, SK were entrusted with the arrangements.
