Gwendolyn (Gwen) MacKenzie of New Glasgow and formerly of Port Hawkesbury passed away on Wednesday June 1st,2016 in the Palliative Care Unit of the Aberdeen Hospital.
Born March 11, 1936 in Sydney, she was a daughter of the late Hector and Minnie (Burke) MacNeil.
Gwen was a kind hearted deeply caring person with many lifelong friends.
She will be remembered fondly for her many years of camping in Country Harbour and her beautiful handmade cards.
Gwen was retired from MT&T Telephone Co., she volunteered for the St. Vincent de Paul Society and the Pictou County Food Bank.
Gwen is survived by the love of her life and her husband of 47 years Eldred MacKenzie; sisters: Janet (Kilmer) Meagher, Averill MacNeil (Carl) both of Port Hawkesbury, and chosen sister Mary MacNeil of Dartmouth; brother-in-laws; Murdock (Eileen) MacKenzie of Trenton, Edward MacKenzie of BC; sister-in-law Verna Hill of Westville; many nieces and nephews; special cousin Joan and Jack Coolen of Halifax.
Gwen was predeceased by her parents and a sister, Kaye Banks.
There will be no visitation by request.
A public funeral mass will take place on Friday at 11 A.M. from St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church with Father Tom MacNeil officiating. A reception will follow the service in the church hall. Burial will take place in Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery.
Family flowers only please.
Donations in memory of Gwen may be made to the Palliative Care Unit of the Aberdeen Hospital or the Kidney Foundation.
