Passed in: Halifax, Canada
Passed on: May 28th, 2016

HEWITT, Gregory Allen “Gregg”, age 66, of Lawrencetown, Annapolis County, passed away May 28, 2016 at Victoria General Hospital, Halifax surrounded by his loving family. Born in Digby, he was a son of the late Harold and Glendean “Deanie” (Dargie) Hewitt. Gregg’s dedicated work ethic started at an early age and continued on throughout his life. Some of his most memorable years were those spent with the Halifax City Police; he always spoke with great pride about being a handguns instructor and working the Paddy wagon. Gregg worked in advertising sales, first with the Aurora and then for 21 years with Mailman/Kentville Publishing, and was well known amongst local business people for his endless supply of jokes and stories. During those years, he was also the man that many people relied upon to deliver their Chronicle Herald in the wee hours of the morning. Gregg started with Remax Banner Real Estate in 2000, where he was a top producing agent for the last 15 years. Gregg was a kind-hearted man of strong convictions. Over the years he was a very successful fund raiser for the Big Bike Ride, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and swim teams in Bridgetown and Lawrencetown. Gregg was a regular donor of platelets through Canadian Blood Services. He was a long-standing volunteer with Valley Restorative Justice where he was an active mediator. Gregg was a member of Masonic St. John’s Lodge No. 2. Gregg lived by the philosophy to “always do the kind and gentle thing”. He enjoyed the simple things in life such as hunting, fishing, and a good steak. Gregg made an impact on those he met with his ready smile and quick-witted humour. Above all else, his family came first and he dearly loved his wife, children, and granddaughters. Gregg is survived by his wife, the former Valerie Charlton; daughters, Andreanna (Robert) Poulin, Georgetown, ON; Kristi Hewitt, Lawrencetown; son, Michael Hewitt, Dartmouth; sister, Sheila (Keith) Alcorn, Middleton; brothers, Glenn (Tina) Hewitt; Peter (Liz) Hewitt; Barry (Cheryl) McEwen, all of Digby; granddaughters, Megan, Samantha, Grace, Mackenzie, Madalynn and several nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank long-time friend Dr. Paul McGuire and the doctors and nurses at VG Hospital, Floor 9A, for their compassionate care and kindness. In keeping with Gregg’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service was held 2:00PM Thursday, June 2, 2016 in the Middleton Funeral Home, 398 Main St., (902) 825-3448 with Rev. Patty Beals officiating. A reception for family and friends followed the service. Private family interment will be in the Fairview Cemetery, Lawrencetown. Family flowers only please. Donations in Gregg’s memory may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia, Canadian Cancer Society or to a charity of your choice.
