Grant Halstead
Passed on: June 18th, 2016
Grant Halstead formerly of Aneroid, SK passed away at St. Joseph's Hospital/Foyer d'Youville in Gravelbourg, SK on Saturday, June 18, 2016. Grant is survived by his wife Barb; son Bradley (Jeanne); granddaughter Angie (Gerald); grandson Micheal; granddaughter Ricki-Lee (Jaret); and his great grandchildren Corey, Kelly, Stacey, Ty, and Emerson. He was predeceased by his parents Harold and Laura; son Garth; and most recently, his life-long best friend, Jack McMillan. Grant was born in Regina on August 3, 1929. He lived with his parents on the family homestead north of Aneroid until he was of school age when the family moved into Aneroid. While he didn't have any biological siblings, he held a brotherly bond throughout his life with another "only child" who lived on a farm nearby, Jack McMillan. Grant met and married Bernice McDonald of Shamrock, SK and together they had two sons, Bradley in 1957 and Garth in 1958. He and Bernice lived in town and eventually divorced. Grant and the boys remained in Aneroid and he later married Barb Halvorsen of Iowa. The Halstead farm remained in operation until it was sold in 1990. Grant was like a walking history book of Aneroid and area. You could ask him anything about anyone and he not only knew their lineage, he also knew names and ages of everyone in their family. Even when he moved into the Prairie View Health Centre in Mankota, SK last year, it didn't take him long to learn about his neighbours and tell his family who they were and where they originated. Grant always drove Fords, he loved dogs, he never missed an issue of the Leader-Post, he enjoyed curling in his earlier years, and he always looked forward to visits from his grandchildren and great grandchildren. When you said goodbye as you left his house, it was a guarantee that you'd actually be there for at least another 15 minutes to an hour because there was another story to tell or he had to check your vehicle over. His grandchildren have happy memories of going out to the farm with Grant when they were kids, where they also knew there would be treats - Grant always had bags of chips and bottles of pop in the Quonset fridge. Over the years, they also enjoyed hearing from Grandpa about the antics of their Dad and their uncle Garth when they were kids and teenagers. Grant will be greatly missed. His family would like to thank the staff at St. Joseph's Hospital for ensuring he was comfortable in his final days, as well as the staff at Prairie View Health Centre in Mankota for the excellent care and compassion shown toward Grant over the past several months. A private family service will be held at a later date and donations in Grant's memory may be made to the Aneroid Cemetery - Memorial Donation c/o The R.M. of Auvergne P.O. Box 60 Ponteix, SK S0N 1Z0. Lemieux Funeral Home, Ponteix, SK were entrusted with the arrangements.
