Doris went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on St. Jean Baptiste Day, Friday, June 24, 2016, through trials, tribulations and chronic pain, she is free at last.
She was the daughter of the late Fred and Ann Mariah (Clarke) Howell of Carbonear, Newfoundland. Doris was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Born Dec. 11, 1923, she moved to Montreal in 1947, worked as secretary and treasurer at the Young Womans Christian Assoc. Doris also worked at Steinberg’s Miracle Mart. She married in 1949, left Montreal in 1965, moving back to Carbonear, Newfoundland, and then settled in Sydney.
Doris made a living, working as a cook for Bairncroft orphanage where she cooked for 36 people. She was employed at Ike’s Deli on Charlotte Street, where she made those delicious smoked meat sandwiches, she worked at Sobey’s, Prince Street, sold Avon, made home parties selling beautiful jewelry, later working at various tailor shops, then opening her own business making beautiful wedding ensembles, custom clothing, even ladies hats.
Doris was a member of Faith Baptist Church, where she first met the love of her life Eugene Sampson in 1968, when he started attending. They married in May 1985 where they lived in their little “mansion on a hilltop”, South Bar, Cape Breton, until January 2013 when God called Eugene home. At Faith Baptist she enjoyed the fellowship of other believers, she sang in the choir, she loved entertaining, cooking, baking, knitting, writing poems and drawing.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband , Eugene Francis Sampson, who she has joined in Glory, her four year old son, Ivan Gauthier, three brothers, George, Fred and Ron Howell, three sisters-in-law, Stella Reid, Lena Richards, Dorothy (Mansfield) Downy.
Doris says goodbye to her son Donald Gauthier, her grandson, who was her pride and joy, Phalen Ivan Gauthier, Eugene’s family, daughters, Sylvia (Wally) Jackson ,Marilyn Burke, Donna (Tom) Drover, sons, Jerry (Valerie) Sampson, Frankie and Donald Wayne, niece, Deborah Crittenden, nephew, Lorne Howell, two special cousins, Ruby Phalen and Joan Downton, dear friends especially Christy Tickner as well as her beloved cat Princess left in the care of Wilma Blois, with thanks.
Thank you to the County homemakers for their support.
A special thanks to the doctors, nurses and the caring staff of Harbourstone who took a special interest in Doris, Dr. Jeannie Ferguson and Dr. Ann Frances D’Intino who made mom’s last few days peaceful. Thank you also to Dr. Buhariwalla, family physician. Derrick Pinhorn, who kept the Sampson driveway always clear in those tough winter months. A special thank you to MLA Michel Samson who faithfully sent mom a Christmas card every year, and to extended family in Louisdale.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Doris’s memory to the Arthritis Society, Bone Density Clinic, Heart and Stroke Foundation, Praise FM Cape Breton Radio, SPCA/ Feral Cat Society or a charity of choice.
At Doris’s request there will be no visitation. All are welcome to join the family for the graveside ceremony to take place at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, June 28, 2016 at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens with Pastor Rob Jones and Rev. Sheldon Chant committing Doris’s body to rest.
A celebration service for Doris Sampson will be held at Faith Baptist Church, Davenport Road, Sydney, to be announced.
Doris’s family will be eternally grateful for the care and compassion shown by the staff of Chant’s Funeral Home.
