It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, wife, aunt, grandma, and friend, Helen MacKenzie, on Saturday, July 2, 2016. She was 78.
Born in Glace Bay, Helen was the daughter of the late Katherine and John Ptasztiewicz, both of Poland.
After graduating from St. Anne's High School, Helen attended Normal College in Truro. She met Lloyd when he began teaching at St. John's School, where she was teaching. Helen loved sewing and made beautiful quilts. She sang with the St. John's choir and her solos were Ave Maria and Mary, Queen of the May. She loved her nights out at the casino and spending time with her family.
She is survived by her husband Lloyd of 52 years; sons, Shane (Cathy), Sydney, N.S.; Darren (Mary), Hanwell, N.B.; her beloved grandchildren, whom she adored, Thomas, Andrew, Michael and granddaughter, Avery; her loving sister, Joann Andrecyk; her nephews, John (Arlene) Andrecyk, Francis (Donna) Andrecyk; nieces, Theresa and Kathy and her sister-in-law, Sheila MacKenzie.
Besides her parents, Helen was predeceased by her brothers, Frankie and Bernie; her nieces, Veronica (Andrecyk) Snow, Colleen (Andrecyk) Dowell and brother-in-law, Lee MacKenzie.
Visitation will be held at Curry's Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay on Thursday, July 7th from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday, July 8th at 10 a.m. at St. Anne's Church, Main Street, Glace Bay with Fr. Norman MacPhee officiating, followed by a reception in the church foyer.
Donations, in Helen's memory, may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, in lieu of flowers.
"We have loved you dearly ~ and will always remember you".
