It is with broken hearts that we, the family of Margaret MacDonald, formerly of 278 Cabot St., announce her passing on Monday, July 4, 2016, at the Cove Guest Home in Sydney. She was 100 years old.
Margaret was born in Sydney on April 24, 1916, to the late Joseph and Agnes (MacDougall) MacMullin.
She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. As a young woman, she worked at the Co-op Grocery Store on Prince Street. She belonged to the St. Rita Hospital Auxiliary for many years. Margaret enjoyed all kinds of music (especially Scottish music), dancing, skating and bowling.
The happiest day of her life was her wedding day on Aug. 8, 1944, when she married Derrick MacDonald, the love of her life. Together they raised eight children and they always supported and encouraged them in music, singing, hockey, skating, basketball and baseball. Both of our parents always maintained a large rink in the backyard during the winter months.
Margaret is survived by her children, Shauna Doolan, Anslem (Kay), Stan (Stephanie), Terrence (Sharon) and Margaret Theresa MacDonald. She is survived by her grandchildren, whom she adored, Melanie (Lloyd), Marc (Jolene), Derek (Carla), James, Sarah (Roddy), Chris (Lisa), Angela (Brandon), Laurie Weir, Jeffrey (Brianne) and Stephanie MacIntyre. Margaret is also survived by 20 beautiful great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind 13 nephews and nieces; one sister, Mary; one sister-in-law, Mary McMullin; and one brother-in-law, Stan MacDonald.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Derrick, in 1977; her daughter, Corinne, and two children in infancy, Pauline and Lawrence; one son-in-law, Edward Doolan; four brothers, Lawrence, Jocus, Benny and Hugh; six nephews; and two sisters-in-law.
Visitation for Margaret MacDonald will be on Thursday, July 7, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at T.W.Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday at 11 a.m. at St. Marguerite Bourgeoys Church with Rev. Bill Burke officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Donations in Margaret’s memory may be made to the C.B. Regional Hospital Foundation.
