Dorothy Margaret Smith (nee Dallman)
Passed Away on July 2, 2016
Dorothy was born on September 10, 1931 in MacDowall Saskatchewan. She was the fifth child born to Albert and Emma Dallman. She was the fifth of their children to pass away, leaving this world only 2 days after her younger sister Marjorie. She grew up and attended school in MacDowall. On February 21, 1953 she married Clifford Smith also from MacDowall. They lived in the MacDowall area for the early part of their married life; eventually moving to British Columbia. At various times they lived in Hixon, Burns Lake and Vanderhoof. Dorothy worked at a store in Hixon, BC where she did everything from placing orders for the store to serving customers, cleaning and even taking inventory. She later worked in the police station in Vanderhoof. When a female prisoner was held in custody they needed to have female guards. She had many interesting adventures there. Cliff and Dorothy bought a janitorial business when they lived in Burns Lake. Together they would clean offices and even telephone booths. Their business took them in and around Burns Lake including going to the far side of Francois Lake on a regular basis. Eventually Cliff and Dorothy returned to Saskatchewan. They made their final home in Prince Albert. During her lifetime, her talents and interests kept her very busy. She made quilts, sewed, crocheted, and could fix almost anything. She repaired and refinished furniture. And almost everyone who came to their home would comment on the beautiful coat tree that stood by the back door. It was a real tree with part of the root forming the base. She brought it home from one of their outings, cleaned it up, stained and varnished it. She loved people and had many friends from all the places they lived. She kept in touch with many of them over the years. Dorothy loved music and was a gifted singer. She used her talents in her local church and at special events, especially gospel concerts. She was involved with her local church right from childhood. She served on church boards and in many other areas of the church as she grew older. The most important and abiding part of Dorothy's life was her Christian faith. Bible study and prayer were a vital part of her everyday life; a great joy in good times and a great comfort in difficult times. She said that the most difficult time she ever had was when Cliff moved to the Herb Bassett home in June of 2015. Even though she believed and trusted the Lord, she struggled with why this was happening in their old age. One year later when she knew that cancer (lymphoma) was soon to take her to her permanent home with her Lord and Saviour, she said that now she understood. She said that God's plan is always perfect and that He made sure Cliff was settled in a good place where he was being well looked after before He called her home. She was at peace. Dorothy passed away in room 501 at the Victoria Hospital in Prince Albert at approximately 11:25 PM on July 2, 2016. She was greatly loved and will be greatly missed. The family would like to thank all those who cared for and helped Dorothy and Clifford especially the doctors and nurses in Prince Albert and Saskatoon and all the staff at the Herb Bassett Home. Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 9, 2016 at Gray's Funeral Chapel, 575 - 28th Street West, Prince Albert, SK with Reverend Rick Martin officiating.
