Lawrence Leo Toney Jr. – 61, of Annapolis Valley First Nation, Cambridge 32, Kings County, passed away Saturday, July 9, 2016 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Berwick, he was a son of the late Lawrence Sr. “Chubby” and Mildred “Minnie” (Smith) Toney. In his earlier years, he was employed as a carpenter prior to becoming a politician and community leader. He was a former Chief of Annapolis Valley First Nation, having been elected to Council at the age of 19. Lawrence most recently enjoyed working with Kings Point to Point. He was also a lifetime member and former vice-president of Valley Search and Rescue. He is survived by his wife, Marlene (McEachern); three sons, Keith Mallet, Annapolis Valley First Nation; Blaine (Michelle) Toney, Aylesford; Daniel Toney (Cebrina Keddy), Annapolis Valley First Nation; three daughters, Charmaine Toney, Annapolis Valley First Nation; Laura Toney, Halifax; Katrina Toney, Bathurst, New Brunswick; four sisters, Jeanette (Lloyd) Petterson, Anita Toney, Marilyn Kennedy and Charlotte (Derb) Fralick, all of Annapolis Valley First Nation; a sister-in-law, Elaine Toney, Wolfville; three brothers, Gary, Randy and Ricky, all of Annapolis Valley First Nation; three brothers-in-law, Keith Julian, Millbrook First Nation, Truro; Tommy (Heather) McEachern, Kingston, Ontario; Robert “Bobby” (Linda) McEachern, St. Albert, Alberta; 15 grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Laverne Julian; a brother, Jerome. Visitation was held from 4:00 p.m. Monday, July 11, 2016 until 8:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 13, 2016 in the family home, 824 Ratchford Road, Cambridge 32, Kings County. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 13, 2016 in St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, Kentville, Father John MacPherson officiating. A reception will follow in the community centre at Annapolis Valley First Nation. Burial will take place at a later date in the Holy Cross Cemetery, Kentville.
