James “Jim” Clements

Born: June 11th, 1925

Passed on: July 15th, 2016

James “Jim” Clements, 91, of Riverview, NB, passed away peacefully at The Dr. Georges-L. Dumont University Hospital Centre on Friday, July 15, 2016. Born in Glenwood, PEI, he was the son of the late John and Emily (Arsenault) Clements.
Jim is survived by his daughter Catherine of Moncton; sons Joe (Anna-Mae Kincaid) of Sarnia, ON and Paul of Toronto, ON; grandchildren John and Laura Clements of Sarnia; sister Rita Geldart (Clifford) of Hillsborough; brother-in-law James Murray of Moncton; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Lucina “Lou” (Stewart) Clements (February 2012), son John Stewart (“Stewartie”), and sisters Helen Bowie (Ken) and Edith Murray (James).
Jim was a Veteran of WWII, having served with the RCAF. He attended St. Bernard’s Church where he served for a time as a Minister of the Eucharist. He was a former member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish, where he was very active, especially in Social Action.
Jim moved to Moncton in 1956 and operated Jim’s Texaco service station. In 1960, he opened Moncton Muffler Sales, later City Muffler Sales, the first muffler shop in Atlantic Canada, with branches in Saint John, Halifax and Dartmouth. He retired for a short time, then started Spring Speciality which he enjoyed until his retirement in 1990.
The organizational and leadership skills that made Jim a successful entrepreneur served him well in his volunteer work after he retired. He served as Co-Chairman of Albert County Christmas Aid for several years. He volunteered with Habitat for Humanity as part of the “Grey Power Team”, a group of seniors who built the first Habitat houses in the Greater Moncton area. He also served on the Board of Directors for Habitat, with a special interest in the Habitat ReStore. In later life, Jim revealed a hidden talent for cooking and baking, and he enjoyed helping to prepare meals at the Karing Kitchen. Jim had a great concern for the poor in developing countries, and he generously funded many charitable projects.
In his younger years, Jim enjoyed stock car racing, first in PEI and then in the Moncton area. He was a big fan of NASCAR. Jim was a long-time member of the Moncton Bicentennial Skating Club, the Riverview Veterans Association and the Probus Club. For many years, he and his wife Lou were members of several local square dance clubs, notably Hoban’s Heroes.
