Hugh Joseph MacEachern, 92, of Sydney, passed away on Saturday, July 16th, 2016, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Hugh was born May 8,1924,in Sydney, Nova Scotia, and was the son, of the late D. H. MacEachern, the owner/operator of McEachern’s Harness Shop, and his mother, Margaret (Gillis) MacEachern, of Lewis Bay West, Grand Mira.
Hugh attended Sydney Academy and completed grade 12. He was a member or the Army Cadet Core.
As a young man, Hugh enjoyed competitive shooting and his high school Cadet Core teammates were Bisley champions. Hugh was an avid reader and had a quest and thirst for knowledge on any subject. Hugh had fond memories of attending movies and critiquing books as a young man, with his good friends, Norman MacLeod and Nathan Cohen. Nathan Cohen later became a theatre critic and was a moderator and broadcaster of the CBC program of the 1950 & 1960’s ‘Fighting Words’.
Hugh was employed as an electrical automotive mechanic for many years at Ramsey’s Electric and later at MacEachern’s Electric.
Hugh, in later years, was an avid viewer of Jeopardy. It was only when Hugh achieved 83 years of age that he met his first defeat in an at home Jeopardy competition. Hugh enjoyed nothing more than reading a good book or digesting any number of newspaper publications.
In his later years, after the death of his wife, Delores (Jessome) MacEachern, his sister-in-law, Theresa Serwatuk, provided significant personal care to Hugh, thus allowing Hugh to remain at home, with the kind assistance of VON and homecare.
The family wishes to provide much thanks to the VON nurses, personal care workers, Dr. Glenn Gracie and pharmacist, Mary Muise, of Pollett Drug Store. Particular thanks are given to the Palliative Care Medical staff for their kind care and efforts in attempting to keep Hugh comfortable and meeting to the needs of his family.
Although he was 92 years of age at the time of his demise, his death was sudden, and as a result of an unfortunate injury resulting from sustaining a fall in his home.
Hugh is survived by his son, Duncan MacEachern; daughter-in-law, Paula (MacNeil) MacEachern; granddaughter, Mary Suzanne; grandson, Robin Hugh and great-grandson, Grayson Hugh. Hugh is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Theresa Serwatuk, Vineta(Charles) Power, Joan (Lewis) Jessome, Etta (Francis) Jessome; brothers-in-law, Bill (Alice) Jessome, Blair (Cecilia) Jessome, Stanley (Cora) Jessome and many nieces and nephews.
