With deep sadness, we mourn the loss of Laverne Squires, born in Hermitage, NL May 6, 1947 and deceased in St. John's July 14, 2016. Grieving are her three daughters, Dale Yeoman (Greg), Corina Boland and Selina Boland, grand daughter Bellasan Avila Boland, loyal longtime friend Bruce Crummell, aunt Maria Strong, sisters Donna Herritt (Lloyd), Mona O'Neill, niece Sherry Hutt-Shaddock (Wayne), nephews Scott Goudie, Jason Goudie (Angela), Brent Herritt (Keelia), great-nephews Gregory McGrath-Goudie, Ryan Goudie, Chase Shaddock and great-niece Jenna Shaddock. Many other special people in Laverne's life include Nelson Boland, Dave Hill, Keith Mcmenamie, Bill Parsons, Sue Cummings. A deep gratitude goes to the staff of Health Sciences Centre dialysis unit, family friends Christian Johansen, Pamela Batten, Sara French, Danyelle Green. Laverne was well-known and loved in Newfoundland as a folk singer who helped pioneer the local music scene in the 1960s with her band Land of Mordor and 1970s with Lukey's Boat. Recognized as the first performer to merge Newfoundland folk with rock, Laverne had a unique voice with incredible mezzo-soprano range and a haunting, unforgettable tone. She will be greatly missed. A memorial visitation at Caul's Funeral Home, LeMarchant Road, in St. John's will be open to the public to celebrate Laverne's life on August 7 12-5 pm. Flowers are welcomed.
