It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Harold Edwin Blodgett who passed away suddenly on the family farm on June 20, 2016 at the age of 72. Harold is survived by his wife of 51 years, Doris (Nieminen); his children Shelley (Clem) Scott of Medicine Hat, AB and Lisa (Cory) LaBoucane of Coldstream, BC; his grandchildren Andrew and Kelsey Scott; his brother Harvey (Judy) Blodgett, Lawrence (Laura) Blodgett, Gary (Joyce) Nieminen, Betty Blodgett and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Clarence and Edith Blodgett, his parents-in-law Andrew and Betty Nieminen, his sister Beverly and Joseph Tuchscherer (brother-in-law), sister Judith and Gordon Brilz (brother-in-law), his brother Alfred Blodgett and his sister-in-law Jeanette Nieminen and two nephews, Warren Blodgett and Craig Brilz. Harold was born on August 6, 1943 in Eston, SK to Clarence and Edith Blodgett of Lancer, SK. He attended Lancer School and is remembered as a very happy, friendly & kind young man who was very athletic. In his early years, he worked side by side with his father and brothers learning the mechanics trade at the family business and later worked as a farmhand for various local farmers and at the Lancer elevator. To add to his numerous skills he enrolled in a short course in welding at the Moose Jaw trades school. In 1962 he was employed by R.M. of Miry Creek as a patrol and cat operator, and was acknowledged for his various skills and hard work ethic at such a young age. Harold married Doris (Nieminen) in 1965 and started farming his mother's land near Lancer, while working for the R.M. and building their first home, with the help of his father-in-law Andy, in Lancer, SK. In 1971 and 1974 Harold and Doris welcomed their two daughters into the world. In 1975 Harold and Doris bought her Grandparents' (Nilo and Annie Nieminen) farm by Abbey, SK on which they built their family home and established their grain and cattle business. His family, his farm, his friends, and his passion for the land became his life's work. Harold was known for his kind-heartedness, volunteerism, community-mindedness, welcoming and social nature, skill as a jack-of-all trades, and for his long hours of work and his physical strength. When anyone needed a hand or an ear, you could always count on Harold. He was always helping family and friends, and was involved in many farm and community projects, breakfasts, BBQs, fundraisers, clean up and moving crews, and fire-fighting brigades. He wasn't afraid to advocate for causes he believed in, and was a great organizer of meetings and events and was sought out to join many committees and to serve in leadership roles. He joined the Saskatchewan Farmers' Union in 1966 and joined the National Farmers' Union in 1968. Harold was a very active life-long member and served as a director and President of his District many times. Harold was passionate about his politics and was an active member of the NDP party, often driving door to door in leadership and local campaigns. He was also a director on the Cabri Co-operative Board and a member of the local Pioneer Co-op Mini Board. He was a member of the Roe School Co-op Hall and was president at the time of his passing. In his "free" time, he had a few hobbies. In his younger years, he liked to golf and fish for fun and he loved watching sports. You would see his smiling face in the crowd at the many sporting events of his daughters, and friends' children. As he aged, he took pride in his gardening, his massive potato crop with his huge potatoes and watching his grandchildren at their sporting events. Harold was a very predictable man who had his daily routines, his favorite foods, his favorite eating places, and of course, coffee row. Harold was known by friends in several communities. Harold will be dearly missed and was cherished by all who knew him. Donations in his memory may be made to the National Farmers' Union, the Heart and Stroke Foundation, the Roe Co-op Community Hall, the Salvation Army Food Bank or a charity of choice. Warren's Funeral Home were entrusted with the arrangements.
