Phyllis Bent

BENT, Phyllis Louise - passed away suddenly at home on July 29, 2016. Born in Forest Glade Annapolis County, she was the twelfth of fifteen children born to the late Parker and Lily (Schofield) Bent. She was a graduate of Macdonald Consolidated High School, Middleton and the Nova Scotia Provincial Normal College, Truro. Following a couple years of teaching at Nictaux and Spryfield, she contracted polio during the 1951 epidemic and spent the following year at the Polio Clinic, Halifax. This included several weeks in the iron lung. As her health began to improve, she was able to tutor a number of younger patients in their school subjects. Following one year of rehab at Lyndhurst Lodge in Toronto, Phyllis was employed with Trans Canada Airlines (now Air Canada) where she remained for the following 36 years. She had the distinction of being the longest full time employee with Air Canada and the only employee who consistently availed herself of all the free passes! She travelled extensively around the world in spite of being confined to a wheelchair for the past 60 years. Upon her retirement, Phyllis spent winters in Fort Lauderdale Florida and summers at her home in Middleton. She is survived by siblings Kath Osbourne and Marion Lundgren, Portland Me., Alden, Dover-Foxcroft Me., Muriel, Middleton, Forrest, Wolfville, and Gerald (Ruth), Margaretville, as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by siblings Doris, Murray, Roy, Enid, Evelyn, Jean, Anna, and George. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Middleton Funeral Home, 398 Main St., (902) 825-3448, where visitation was held on Wednesday, August 3 with the service held on Thursday, August 4, followed by a reception.
