John "Jack" Ward

John "Jack" Ward

We, the family of the late John Robert "Jack" Ward, of Foxbrook Road Westville, wish to announce his passing on August 3, 2016. With his loving family at his bedside he joined our mother Greta who he missed profoundly since her death in 2013. Jack was born in Eureka on October 5, 1928 and was the son of the late Cecil and Olive (Thompson) Ward.
Spending his early years in Eureka the family moved to a farm in West River Station where he lived until marrying our mother in 1951. Dad spent his early career working for the Canadian National Railroad where he was Section Foreman. After leaving the CNR he pursued a career in road building with Tidewater Construction. He ended his formal working career with the Town of Westville as equipment operator, being famous for keeping the roads of Westville clear with the grader during the worst winter storms.
Dad will be remembered as a great storyteller, especially when surrounded by close family and friends. Others would describe him as a very quiet and private man who celebrated the simple things in life like fishing, hunting, gardening and his kids and grandkids. In his later years he and Mom would spend hours in their car driving through old country roads always with a new story and a grand adventure to share on their return.
He will be forever missed by his children, Jean Ward (Nigel Weaver); Mary Anne Little (Allan “Abner”); Kathy Sutherland (Keith); John Ward (Valerie); Jim Ward (Cindy); Patti Kent (Wayne); Michelle Ward (Wayne Hale); and David Ward. He leaves a legacy of 16 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Jack is also survived by his sister Doris, Saltsprings; brothers, Cecil "Mickey" (Betty), Truro; James "Jim" (Evelyn), Saltsprings and many nieces and nephews.
Besides his wife Greta, he was predeceased by sister Francis “Fannie” Brown; brothers, Lester "Bill" and Gerald “Gerry” .
Visitations will be at Eagles Funeral Home, Westville on Friday August 5th from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. His funeral is being held 1:00 pm Saturday from St. Luke’s United Church, Salt Springs with Michael Simmons officiating. A private family interment will follow at a later date at the Gladstone Cemetery, Four Mile Brook.
Donations in his memory can be given to the Gladstone Cemetery or a charity of choice. www.eaglesfuneralhome.ca
