MICHAEL MACINTOSH

Born In: GLACE BAY
Born: October 19th, 1937

Passed on: August 6th, 2016

It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, Michael MacIntosh at the age of 78, on Saturday, August 6th, 2016, at home, surrounded by family and his loving wife, Carol Anne (Boutilier) MacIntosh of 55 years by his side. Michael MacIntosh was born in Glace Bay, NS on October 19th, 1937. He was the eldest son of the late Leo and Kathleen (Dunlop) MacIntosh. Michael was a member of the Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church. He was also a member of the Eastern Cape Breton Cursillo movement and was a man of great faith.
Michael graduated from St. Anne's High School and went on to further his education at the NSIT in Halifax, receiving his Electrical Journeyman's ticket. He then enrolled into the Nova Scotia Teachers College and upon receiving his teachers certificate went on to teach Electrical Construction at the Vocational School in Sydney for 32 years. Michael's desire for continuing education saw him enrolled into the Cape Breton University where he received many university credits.
Michael met the love of his life, Carol, in 1957 and they were married on August 2nd, 1961. They were blessed with 3 children, 6 grandchildren and a great-grandchild. To Michael, family was the most important thing is his life and he enjoyed spending weekends, tobogganing or ice fishing in winter or camping in the summer when his children were young and in later years he enjoyed family gatherings at the ‘Bungalow’ in Lake Ainslie. Annual LA reunions always included extended family and all generations and would often last days, with campfires and guitars well into the night. On occasion he could be heard belting out some Old Hank Williams tunes to accompany whomever would play one for him.
Michael was also an avid outdoor sportsman and exceptional athlete. Michael received awards for largest big game and fish on several occasions, while also being inducted into both the Cape Breton and Glace Bay Sports Hall of Fame for Baseball. Michael played on championship Baseball, Broomball, Bowling and Curling teams. Michael also enjoyed his playing years with the Huff and Puff hockey team at the Miner's Forum in Glace Bay, whom he played twice a week with until recent years. When Mike was not hunting, fishing, playing sports or spending time with his family he could be seen watching his beloved Toronto Maple Leafs from the comfort of his Lazy Boy. He was fortunate to see them play live on several occasions and always took great pleasure in a good win over the Habs. Michael also enjoyed travelling with his wife and family and took several trips to Florida, the Caribbean and to Newfoundland where he would always manage to find some time to spend on the water fishing. His prized catch was an 80lb Sailfish caught off the coast of Puerto Rico. Michael also had an artistic side to his personality which not everyone knew, along with being an amateur artist; he was a student of the Poetry Institute of Canada where he became a published poet and short story author. His poem ‘The Margaree’, composed while participating in the Art of Living program at the Cape Breton Cancer Centre was put to music and song by the Barra MacNeil's and was heard on occasion on CBC Radio. He would as well be called upon often by his family and friends to MC gatherings, or prepare a poem for a special occasion. Michael is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Carol (Boutilier) MacIntosh; daughters, Michele (Vince) Jessome and Arlene (Willie) MacIntosh; son, Allan (Catherine) MacIntosh; grandchildren, Alison (Justin) Lewis, Michael (Taylor) MacNeil, Bradley Jessome, Owen & Hannah MacIntosh; great-grandchild, Nora Mae Lewis and siblings, Collette (Bernie) Livingston, Leone (Wilfred) Carnall, Eric (Jean) MacIntosh, Doreen (Ed) Mullins and Barry (Dianne) MacIntosh. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by grandson, Ryan MacNeil who passed away at the age of 25, on July 5th, 2016 as a result of a brain tumor. Ryan prior to his own passing could often be found alongside his Papa's side providing comfort and companionship to him during Michaels 21 year courageous battle with Prostate Cancer. Visitation for Michael will be 6-9 p.m. Tuesday, August 9th, 2016 at Curries Funeral Home Main Street, Glace Bay, NS. A funeral mass will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 10th, 2016 at Holy Cross Church, Glace Bay, NS with Fr. Norman MacPhee officiating. Burial will take place at St. Anne's Cemetery, Glace Bay, NS.
Donations in Michael's memory may be made to the Cape Breton Cancer Comfort Centre, Palliative care, the Prostate Cancer Society of Canada or the VON. Always loved and will never be forgotten. Although we are apart, God has you in his keeping; I have you in my heart. Aces XOXO. Until we dance again.
