It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Malden MacDonald, age 66, on August 9, 2016 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Sydney, Malden was the son of the late Murdock and Edena (MacAskill) of North River. Malden was employed at the Sydney Steel Plant for 30 years. He was a devoted and loving family man. Malden was a parent to ten children; five daughters, four sons and a granddaughter still at home. Malden was an exceptional fast-pitch softball player. He played many years with the Membertou Expos, MacLean Brother’s Faucets and the Anthony’s Canteen Cardinals. He was also an active candlepin bowler and a member of the 400 Club. Malden was an avid fan of the Montreal Canadians until the very end. Throughout his long illness, he remained strong and kept his faith. He will be truly missed and forever loved by his family. Malden is survived by his loving wife, Brenda (Nash); daughters, Melissa (Charles), Myrna (Ryan), Mellena (Shawn), Maureen (Otimar), Nicky (Caleb); sons, Christopher (Alex), Matthew (Janelle), Josh (Jill), Brendon (Sasha); grandchildren, Taneillia(Jordan), Lyric (Ian), Braxton, Dylan, Sy’Rai, Jaiden, Taylor, Matthew, Emma, Cara, Braylon, Zoe, Otimar, Naomi, Kylie, Riley and Elias. Also left to mourn are his siblings, Racine (David), Alvin (Lorry) and Milton (Louann); Aunt, Annie Roberts; brother-in-law, Alfie (Rita). He is also survived by his former wife, Anita Paul; mother-in-law, Viola Paul; sisters-in-law, Shirley, Gloria, Emily, Connie, Joyce; brothers-in-law, Ike and James. Malden will also be greatly missed by many nieces, nephews, cousins and ‘Special Aunt’ Helen and family and all of his friends ‘Out on the Mira’ where he enjoyed spending time during the summer. Besides his parents, Malden is predeceased by his father and mother-in-law, John and Edith Nash; father-in-law, John Paul; sisters-in-law, Palma, Beverly, Emma and Wanda. Cremation has taken place. Funeral service will be held on Monday, Aug 15, 2016 at 11 a.m. at Bethel Presbyterian Church, Sydney, with Rev. Bob Lyle officiating. A reception in the church hall will take place after the service and burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery, in North River. Donations can be made to the CBRH Cancer Patient Care Fundor a charity of your choice.
