Moffatt, Douglas Stewart – 91, of Truro died peacefully at home Thursday, August 11, 2016 surrounded by the loving presence of his family. Born January 29, 1925 in Sydney Cape Breton, to John and Etta Moffatt, he is the last surviving member of his immediate family. He grew up with his three brothers Garfield, William (Billy), and Howard, and later, when children were evacuated from Great Britain during World War II, George Thompson joined the family. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Berta (2010), and his adored youngest daughter Rachel (1979). Doug is survived by his four children. Deborah (Gus) MacLellan, Rebecca (Bryan) Langille, William (Gail) Moffatt, and Garfield (Susan) Moffatt. Surviving grandchildren are, Daniel (Amy) MacLellan, Craig (Kate) MacLellan; Erinn Beth Langille, Matthew (Stephanie Cheng) Langille, Michael (Jaime Harris) Langille; Rachel (Lucas McCabe ) Moffatt, Jonathan and Luke Moffatt and Taylor and Liam Moffatt. Douglas has 5 great grandchildren and numerous surviving nieces and nephews.

A graduate of Sydney Academy, he went on to study engineering and business, at Mount Allison. His degree was interrupted by the Second World War. Douglas trained in Nassau Bahamas with the Royal Canadian Air Force in the position of Flight Engineer, until the wars’ end, when he returned to Nova Scotia and completed his degree at Dalhousie. While living in Halifax, he met his beloved wife Berta Viola Wagstaff, a VG Nurse, and they married March 12, 1949. In 1948, Douglas and his brother Billy, bought their first truck eventually growing Moffatt Bros from a grocery store to one of the largest trucking companies east of Montreal. During their 34-year ownership, they employed hundreds of people, in the Maritimes and in Newfoundland and Labrador. Douglas was a founding member and President of the Atlantic Provinces Trucking Association. He was active in community affairs and assisted numerous charitable organizations, including Chairman of the Board of Stewards of the First United Church, chaired the Colchester Regional Hospital Board, as well as, being active in Kiwanis Club and the Golden K Club. He was a 57-year Mason and a member of Fellowship Lodge #112. Since his time of military service, Doug remained a member of the Royal Canadian Legion.

Among his most meaningful and personal projects was the creation and nurturing of the Rachel and Berta Moffatt Trust, the purpose of which is to support youth endeavors which the Trust has done for the past 37 years. We encourage all looking to remember Doug to consider their remembrances and donations in his name to this Trust. This can be done through First United Church, Truro.

The family is eternally grateful to Murdo, Debbie, Dee, Marion, Janice, Sharon and Marian who have lovingly assisted Doug and family in his late life journey. Visitation will be held at the Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow Street, 2-4pm and 6-8pm on Sunday August 14th. Celebration service at First United Church, 711 Prince Street, 11am Monday August 15th, 2016. The service will be followed by a reception at the Church Hall.
