He was a proud Veteran of the Second World War, serving in Italy, France, Germany and England as a field ambulance orderly and in the map making unit. After the war, he relocated to Sydney, where he worked for 40 years at the Steel Plant in the print shop and warehouse. Harry was a master carver, producing numerous pieces of art focusing on animals. His craft was recognized nationally with an appearance on the Juliette and Friends TV Show and internationally, with one of his eagles being presented to President Nixon and his First Lady in 1973. Harry also shared his talents and passion for carving by teaching night school classes. He was a community minded person, which was demonstrated by his time, effort and commitment to the SPCA, the Cape Breton Tourist Association, the Breakfast Program at Cornwallis and Cusack Elementary Schools and the many hours snow blowing for his neighbours. In his early years, Harry filled his days with long drives, fishing, hunting and walking his beloved dog, Buffy. He was a member of the Church of Christ the King, Sydney. Special thanks to the medical staff, housekeeping and kitchen staff at Taigh Na Mara, the Hodders and Monk Pretty for their continuous support. Visitation will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Thursday, August 18, 2016, froM 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held in the chapel on Friday 11 a.m., with Rev. Reg MacDonald officiating.
