Verna Killam

Born in Thomson Station on April 28, 1913, Verna was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was predeceased by her husband, Ernest Edward Killam, in 1996 and by her parents, William and Etta Jane (Stewart) Mattinson. She was also predeceased by her three older siblings, Orman (Pauline), Claude and Della (Vince) Wallace and her four younger siblings, Mabel (George) Armour, Lorne (Ester), Roy and Audrey (Fulton) Gates. She is survived by her son, George (John Brown) of Weymouth.
After finishing high school, Verna worked in the Royal Store in Yarmouth and then worked helping her mother in the kitchen of the various logging camps owned by her father, cooking for 20 to 30 lumbermen who worked there. When the family moved from Yarmouth to Richmond in Yarmouth County, Verna met her future husband, Ernest and they were married in 1939. They moved to Sydney in 1955 and eventually, to a senior apartment at 1249 George Street. Verna lived there until the age of 100, and then moved to Weymouth to live with her son for a brief time, until a fall necessitated moving to Villa Acadienne Home for Special Care in Meteghan, where she lived until her death at age 103 on, August 16, 2016. A sincere thank you to the wonderful staff for the care and love Verna received at the Villa. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Sydney Memorial Chapel where visitation will take place on Sunday, August 21, 2016, from 6:30 until 8 p.m. and a memorial service will be held on Monday, August 22, at 2 p.m. For all of Verna’s family and friends in Western Nova Scotia, a Celebration of Life will be held on September 1 at 2 p.m. at 4626 Highway 1 in Weymouth, Rev. David Fletcher officiating.
