Phyllis HAUGHAN

HAUGHAN, Phyllis M.
March 16, 1936 - August 17, 2016
Lyons Brook
Our mother, Phyllis Marie Haughan, was born to Maurice and Vera (Himmelman) Hirtle March 16, 1936, as the fifth of six children. She was born on Bushen Island surrounded by the icy salt water of the Atlantic Ocean at the mouth of La Have River, Lunenburg County.
Her parents were hard working fisher people who lived from the bounty of the ocean as the only inhabitants of this small island. As a consequence the family members were close and influenced strongly by their circumstance into strong, independent, resourceful individuals who could turn their hand to many things. It is this influence that contributed to my mother’s skilled workmanship and ethics reflected in her sewing, knitting, quilting, cooking and gardening projects. All completed with care and love, we were the fortunate benefactors of her work.
My mother started work at the early age of 16 years old, common in the day, in Bridgewater as a telephone operator. She married, Glendon Haughan, March 18, 1955, and soon moved to Brooklyn, Queens County, where Dad was employed at Bowater Mersey Paper Company. They were strong members of the Anglican Church and Mom assisted as their treasurer. After 10 years in Brooklyn, Mom left the South Shore and her extended family with my father to pursue his career at Scott Maritimes Pulp and Paper Ltd. By this time her daughter, Virginia Haughan (Greg West) was 8 years old and Peggy Simpkin (Charlie Strickland) was 11 years of age. They lived in New Glasgow for 5 years where she worked for Maritime Tel & Tel and then moved to Lyons Brook, where the family lived happily since 1972.
Children who went to West Pictou Elementary School may remember Mom as one of the playground supervisors. My mother helped when called on - her church, St James Anglican Church (Pictou), her community, and her friends. She was an active member of the “Golden Girls” who officially still meet together in Pictou for coffee and tea. They were her friends and she valued this time with them.
My mother was dedicated to her family. She was there to help and offer support through the good and bad times. We are proud and privileged to have been her daughters. Our memories are full of her love.
I want to thank the “darlings” of her life at Willow Lodge Home for Special Care, Tatamagouche, and the compassionate care the staff provided for my mother on her journey home. My mother and her family were treated with respect and dignity. Special thanks to Mom’s Angel - Chrissie, as well as, Audrey, Linda, Karen, and Betty.
God bless her and be with her and my father.
She was predeceased by brothers, Marshal Hirtle (Minnie) and Elsworth Hirtle (Greta); and sister, Doris Smith (Malcolm).
She is survived by her sister, Nina Teal (Earl Teal); and sister, Vivian Sponagle (deceased husband Ronald Sponagle); grandchildren, Sara Allen (children Cali and Whyatt), Pamela Simpkin (daughter Kayla Chalmers ) and Daniel Simpkin.
The visitation will be held in the McLaren Funeral Home in Pictou from 7 - 9 PM on Sunday August 21st. Family service will be officiated by Rev. Aiden Kingsbury on Monday August 22nd.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to The Alzheimer Society of Canada.
-Virginia Haughan and Peggy Simpkin
