Shirley Grace MacKenzie

It is with great sadness that the family of Shirley Grace MacKenzie announces her passing on Friday, August 19, 2016, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Born on February 26, 1935, and raised in MacKay’s Corner, Glace Bay, Shirley was the daughter of the late John Thomas and Katherine Anne (Buchanan) Weatherby. Shirley, along with her loving husband of 53 years, Aubrey, enjoyed over 40 years of camping and companionship with her Ben Eion family. She spent many happy hours around the campfire laughing and singing while also enjoying many a game of darts and horseshoes. Shirley also enjoyed her work at Glace Bay High School where she made many young friends as they passed through the halls and cafeteria. Shirley is survived by her sons, Kevin (Nancy), at home, and Darren (Andrea), Ontario and her granddaughter, Jenna (Zach), Sydney. Also left to mourn are her sisters, Jessie MacDonald, Glace Bay, and Mary (Gerald) Munroe, California; sisters-in-law, Audy Weatherby, Arlene (John) MacVarish and Pat MacKenzie, all of Glace Bay and Carmel (Len) Doucette, Ontario; brothers-in-law, Buddy and Johnny (Rita) MacKenzie, both of Glace Bay. Shirley will also be missed by her many nieces and nephews, friends and neighbours and by her special canine companion, Hunter MacKenzie. Shirley was predeceased by her sisters Anne (James) MacVicar, Mildred (Al) MacNeil and Ruth MacIntyre and brother, Donald John (DJ) Weatherby; brothers-in-law, Omar MacDonald; Milton (Bernadette) and Alfred MacKenzie; as well as, sister-in-law, Fay VandenBossche. At Shirley’s request, cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held from 6-9pm on Monday, August 22, 2016, at Curry’s Funeral Home, 775 Main Street, Glace Bay, NS.
The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, August 23, 2016 at 11am in the Funeral Home Chapel. Interment to follow at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney, NS.
