Joan Muriel Spencer, age 86, of Swift Current, SK passed away August 10, 2016. The Graveside Service was held Saturday, August 20, 2016 at 2:00 pm at Memory Gardens Cemetery with Reverend Jonathan Hoskin officiating. Eulogists were Suzanne Giroux, Sandra Dwornik, John, Joe and Jim Spencer. Joan is survived by daughters, Suzanne Giroux (Roland), Sandra Dwornik (Wayne); sons, John (Kellie), Joe and Jim; grandchildren, Shane and Chantelle Giroux,Spencer and Brittany Dwornik, Will and Katie Spencer, Nicole Baker and Diana Fink; great-grandchildren, Kira Giroux,Jayden and Hunter Giroux, Serenity and Kelton Dwornik, Efrayim Baker, Cayden Cheung and Sophie Fink; brothers, David and Jim Rush; and sister Grace Darling. She was predeceased by parents, John Rush (1952) and Grace Thorson (2006); husband, Bill Spencer (2008); sister Virginia Ford (1994); brothers Dennis Rush (1985), Jerry (1986)and Stanley (1987). Joan was born on May 19, 1930. Following her formal education she attended Normal School in Moose Jaw, SK. Joan married William Brock Webster Spencer on December 22, 1950 at First United Church by Rev. Bell in Swift Current. She was employed as a teacher at Lammermoor from 1948-1949 and Orillia School near Success from 1949-1953. Once Joan married Bill she was now a farmer's wife also but she continued teaching until 1953, when the family started arriving! Bill and Joan had 5 children, so the years 1954 to 1975 were particularly busy ones. Joan then was secretary for Wheat Valley Telephone Co. from 1959-1978; Labor Force Interviewer for Stats Canada from 1978-1995; and worked for Canada Mortgage and Housing doing housing and apartments starts monthly from 1986-1995. Joan had a long association with the Chinook Regional Library. When she heard a regional library was being formed in 1971 she was immediately interested. Joan attended meetings whenever she could and started going regularly in the late 70's. She went on the board as representative of R.M. Riverside in 1984-1985 as member-at-large. From 1988-2012 she was a member of the executive committee serving as vice-chair from 1996-2008 and again in 2011-2012. She served on all committees and received a 25 year award certificate from the region and was very proud to have her name chosen to be nominated for Saskatchewan Library Trustees Association Honorary Life Membership Award. Joan was always very active in her "SUCCESS" community. She was a member of the school board for 4 years, Hall and Sports Day Association for 3 years, 4-H leader for 4 years, Mixed and Ladies Curling Club, United Church Women. She also taught Sunday school, and was secretary for Success History Book published in 1981. Joan was also a member of Women's Institute for 50 years and was a Regional Director for Swift Current District and on the provincial board for 3 years. She has been a member of Success Slimmettes for over 50 years. Joan was secretary of the Morse PC constituency for 3 years and ran as a candidate in 1981. Joan was also a member of the Palliser Regional Care Centre board for 12 years and received a 10 year plaque for her services. Joan also was secretary of Matinee Curling Club in Swift Current as well as Success for 10 years. Joan was a very accomplished homemaker for many years and successfully (with Bill's help) raised 5 wonderful children. Joan and her husband Bill ran a successful grain and cattle farm enterprise for over 50 years. Gardening, vegetables and fruit growing took care of any spare time. Joan also sewed some of her children's clothes which she found pleasurable and a money saving endeavour. In the last 15 years Joan was very interested in genealogy. She also loved to read and use her computer and then an IPad to read newspapers worldwide and loved to look for information on the internet. She said it was a marvelous invention! Joan was a very devoted and loving mother and grandmother. She loved to cheer on her children and then grandchildren in their sporting activities and was very supportive of all their other endeavours. Joan has lived in Swift Current since June 2009 and was very active in all the projects at Riverview Village Estates where she lived. She will be fondly remembered but sadly missed by her family and friends. In Joan's memory, memorial donations may be made to the Dr. Noble Irwin Health Care Foundation.
