We regret to announce the death of Alexander Joseph (Coogan) Hill aged 95 of Dominion, on Sunday Aug 21 at the Palliative Care Unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, surrounded by family. Coogan, as he was commonly known, quietly and peacefully began his final journey to be reunited with his wife, Violet .The son of Richard Hill and Margaret MacIntyre, Coogan was born on Dec.13,1920, in Sydney and up to his death held the title of ‘Oldest Man in Dominion,’ a handle he proudly and defiantly defended. Coogan worked in the Coal Mines at #26 and 1B Collieries until his retirement in the early 70’s. An ardent member and friend of Bill W. He had the power of living "One Day at a Time" and continued that into his almost 44 years in the A.A. Program. Going to meet with his other family each and every night for all of those years, not only gave him the serenity he needed as he embraced the steps and traditions, it allowed him to share that strength with so many other men and women. Coogan is survived by daughters, Charmaine Syms, Dominion, Priscilla(Joe MacPherson) Halifax; by grandchildren, Shane and Alison Hill both in HRM, Grant and Blake Syms Dominion and great-granddaughter, Ava Kemp, Halifax. He is survived by one sister, Rita Daley Dominion and also many cherished nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife, Violet(Stamper); brothers, Johnny, Naish, Stook and sisters, Mary, Annie, Della and two sons-in-law, Gary Hill and Shelly Syms. Coogan was a character in his own right and all who knew him came away with the impression, "How can such a small man make a huge impact? Whether you'd find him in the aisles of Wallmart, Dollarama, or in any of several stores on his daily rounds seeking that elusive 1991Quarter that he felt was his to discover, Coogan made the excursions on his terms. Coogan loved to hunt, fish, read, especially Louis Lamour westerns, Golf, yes golf and repeatedly watch war movies at the 1000 decibel level. He loved to sit and listen to Fiddle music on the swing, Bulk Barn Seniors day, Lucky 7 scratch tickets, teasing and ribbing family and friends in ways only he knew he could get away with. Right up to the last Road he travelled, he knew that the final destination was going to be on his terms and as such we know that he lived a good life, a long life and his way, every day, "One day at a time." The family would like to thank Drs., B. McCarville and D'Intino and all the nursing staff at 4D-4E at CB Reg.Hospital.
Funeral services are under the direction of Curry's Funeral home Main St. Glace Bay. Visitation will be held on Wednesday Aug 24, 2-4 & 7-9.
