New Glasgow - It is with sadness that the family of Vesta Mildred Mosher announce her passing on August 21, 2016, at The Cove Guest Home, Sydney, Nova Scotia, after a lengthy illness.
Born November 6, 1928, in Windsor, NS, Vesta was the daughter of Harry and Mildred (Parker) Mosher and the step-daughter of O. Annie (McRae).
Besides her parents, Vesta was predeceased by her brother Dr. Thornton Mosher and sister-in-law Madeleine Mosher and also most recently Ernest Parsons.
Vesta is survived by niece, Lorraine Mosher-Parsons and grandniece Madeleine Parsons of Louisbourg, NS, nephew, Roy Mosher (Ronna) and grandnieces: Lindsey, Laura and Heather, all of Calgary, AB.
Vesta grew up in New Glasgow, NS, attending New Glasgow High School where she excelled both academically and athletically. A scholarship to Mount Allison University (Licentiate of Music 1949) pointed her in the direction of a music career. A scholarship furthered her studies in London, England 1952 earning her a Licentiateship from The Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and in 1953 an Associateship from The Royal College of Music. During this time Vesta had the opportunity to travel extensively throughout Europe. In 1977 she received a BA Degree from Mount Allison University. From 1950-1960 Vesta was employed by Maritime Conservatory of Music in Halifax, NS. In 1960 she returned home to New Glasgow establishing her piano studio where she taught until retirement in 2007. She was an accomplished accompanist, organist and choir director. From 1989-1995 Vesta directed the Pictou County Community Orchestra.
She also loved writing and had considered a career in journalism. Numerous projects she was involved in fulfilled this interest. She wrote a weekly Arts Column for The Evening News. From 1955-1960 she was involved in local radio productions and from 1965-1975 she did interviews and documentaries for local cable television. In 1993 Vesta's interest in history of local musicians and theatre arts took her in the direction of research and she originated the musical "Christie" and in 1998 the musical "Harry and the Boss". She was music and orchestra director of both productions. In 1998 she wrote "The New Glasgow Music Festival - Not Just a History - 1938-1998". She worked tirelessly with volunteer groups interested in supporting local and visiting talent by providing recital assistance. She received awards in recognition of her contribution to community cultural activities.
Vesta strove for excellence in all she did. She said the best part of her work was watching her students succeed. Vesta loved life and all it offered. She loved to be physically active, from basketball as a youth, to golfing, bicycling, cross country skiing, skating or walking Melmerby Beach.
Her words of wisdom to us all were, "Don't forget to have fun!"
Our heartfelt thanks and gratitude to the staff of The Cove Guest Home for all the care, understanding and love they provided for Vesta over the past 3 years.
In keeping with Vesta's wishes, cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held at 2 pm Saturday, in Trinity United Church, New Glasgow, with Rev. Donna Tourneur officiating. Reception to follow. Burial will be in Abercrombie Cemetery.
