Clayton McKenzie Spicer

Spicer, Clayton McKenzie, Truro, April 4, 1934 – August 25, 2016
Clayton’s family sadly announces his unexpected passing at the Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro on Thursday, August 25, 2016. Born to the late Eleanor and Roland Spicer of Paradise, he was a brother to Jim (Alma), Paul (Phyllis), Eileen (Eldred), Margaret (Douglas), Janet (Jim), Jerry and Wayne. As a young man, Clayton enlisted in the RCAF, returning to Bridgetown in the 50’s to marry his first love, the late Faye Newbery. They became devoted parents to Pam Watson (David, deceased), John and David (Kathy) Spicer. As the grandchildren arrived, Clayton became the finest “Gramps” of all to Tara (Edward) Clarke, Gerry (Sharon) and Shawn (Zoe) Watson; Jordan, Jack and Katie Spicer; six loving great-grandkids followed. In 1970, Clayton purchased “The Clayton Spicer Insurance Company” and for twenty-five years he faithfully served his clients up and down the valley. A modest, quiet and unconventional man with an unexpected sharp wit, Clayton easily made friends and earned the respect of everyone he met. The business still bears his name. With a passion for music, Clayton performed with the Bridgetown and Hubtown Fiddlers and sang in choirs. He was happiest with a hammer in his hand and tending his garden. An avid sports fan, Clayton adored the company of his two furry friends, Olivia and Brooke. In 1990, Clayton retired and his life changed directions when he remarried and he and Pauline relocated to Nova Scotia’s north shore. Sailing on the bay ignited his spirit and travelling far and wide provided genuine happiness. In 2005, Clayton was denied the right to continue enjoying the shore when he became visually impaired and was plagued by additional illnesses. A decision was made to move to nearby Truro. Besides his parents, Clayton was predeceased by brothers, Jim, Jerry, Wayne; sisters, Eileen and Margaret. He leaves behind his beloved children, family and friends and will be forever in the heart of his second wife, Pauline. Known affectionately as “Clay” by his step-children, he will hold a huge spot of love and respect in the memories of Jeff (Melissa) and Greg (Bonnie) Kenney, Terri Bradley and Jacquie (Bruce) Robinson. Clayton was also a favourite in his extended family and held a close relationship with his daughter-in-law, Karel Spicer. A gentle nature, a gentle spirit; his gentlemanly ways will be an example of all who knew and loved him, and will continue on through his family. Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Clayton’s life will be held on Wednesday, August 31 at 2 pm in Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow Street, Truro. Memorial donations may be graciously accepted by St. Andrew’s United Church or the Colchester County SPCA. Live webcasting of the service will begin at 1:58 pm (Atlantic Time) and is available with on-line condolences at www.ColchesterCommunity.com
