Carl Thomson

Born: November 1st, 1938

Passed on: August 27th, 2016

Carl William Thomson – November 1, 1938 - August 27, 2016. Carl Thomson loved pie: deep dish wild blueberry, apple with wedges of cheddar, mincemeat and lemon meringue which he learned to bake in his 70s. He also liked to create new culinary combinations and sensations. He could make anything with his hands and his hands were huge. His ring finger was a size 17 and his fingernails were ground down by years of working on the Dominion Atlantic Railroad and clearing his land. He retired from the Department of Highways after 25 years of service. He loved the land: woods, nature, hunting and fishing. He loved pipe bands, American football, dollarama fruitcake, Swiss Chalet and Annapolis County air. He hated politics, Canadian football, washing dishes and meals that didn't end with pie. He wished he could have been born a pioneer. He often did his own dental work in his metal shop, snared rabbits (just the bad ones) and loved wood heat. He was a proud member of the Kentville Volunteer Fire Department for many years as well he loved to play softball and once hit the cover off a ball. He was THE best card picker outer. He would stand for hours, reading verses to make sure it was a perfect fit for the recipient. He loved getting cards and would look at the back and say "you all spent too much." He was predeceased by his parents, Bill and Erma Thomson; sisters, Lorraine Thomson and Fran Mason and his beloved wife, Joanne. He is survived by his two daughters, Sue Smiley (Darrin Harvey) and Denise Thomson; son, Scott Thomson; step daughter, Louise Oliver (Brian); and his grandchildren, Haley (Chris) Rushton, Jesse (Shannon) Thomson, Luke Green; step-grandchildren, Justin (Theresa) Oliver, Courtney Oliver, Colin Frost and great granddaughter, Alice Rushton. At Carl's request there will not be visitation or a funeral. He has been cremated and returned to the land he loved. If you wish to honor him, have some pie, enjoy nature, tease a cat and laugh often. Arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville.
