Sister Regina Mary McLean, 86, died in the QEII Health Sciences Center, Infirmary Site, Halifax, NS on August 27, 2016. Born in Dominion, Cape Breton, NS on April 2, 1930, she was a daughter of Leo and Amy (Daly) McLean. Sister Regina entered the Sisters of Charity - Halifax on October 1, 1955 and made her perpetual profession on August 15, 1964. Prior to entering the congregation, Sister Regina had earned a BA from Mount Saint Vincent College. After profession, she received a B.Ed. and an M.A. in English from the same institute. Sister’s ministry in education began in 1958 when she was sent to St. Patrick School in Quebec City, QC as a substitute teacher for three months. She returned to Halifax, NS and taught in the primary grades of St. Patrick School from 1958 to 1963. She was then missioned to Vancouver, BC where she taught students in Grades 9 through 12 at Notre Dame High School and served as Librarian until 1965. After a year teaching in New Waterford, she returned to Halifax and began teaching in St. Patrick High School and remained there until 1981. From 1982 until 1987 she became a Resource Teacher at Titus Smith
School. Sister Regina was then transferred to the Boston Province where she taught at Monsignor Ryan High School from 1987 to 1991. The following year was her sabbatical year. In 1992, Sister Regina
began as a volunteer at House of Hope in Glace Bay, which is a centre for recovering alcoholic women, a work she engaged in until 2000. In that year, she retired from active ministry, and returned to Halifax. Eventually she moved to Mount Saint Vincent Motherhouse where she resided until 2008 when all the sisters moved to Caritas Residence in Halifax.
Sister Regina is survived by several nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sisters, Alice Gillis, Jean MacIntyre, Bette MacDonald and by her brothers, Clarence, Harry, and Wilfred. The body will be in Caritas Residence on Wednesday, August 31, with visitation from 3 p.m. until the Prayer Service at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, September 1, at 10 a.m. in the Immaculate Conception Chapel in Caritas Residence. Burial will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lower Sackville, NS.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sisters of Charity Ministry Fund.
