Marian Jean Hemsworth (MacInnes) of Glace Bay died August 31, 2016, at the Glace Bay General Hospital with loving daughter and best friend Morah and family friend Cathy Power at her side. Marian was the daughter of the late Thomas Charles and Sarah Jane (MacKenzie) MacInnes.
Jean graduated from Glace Bay High in June, 1941. She graduated from the Glace Bay General Hospital, RN Program in 1945 and graduated from the University of Toronto Nursing Education Program in 1947. She also completed a 2-year program in Hospital Organization and Management in 1961; Intramural Sessions in 1960-61 at the University of Manitoba; completed a Fellowship Program at the American College of Health Service Executives in 1975 and obtained F.A.C.H.E. and life membership upon retirement in 1992.
Jean was a Regent of the Council of Regents, American College of Health Service Executives (representing Atlantic Provinces from 1978-1981); Chairman of the Cape Breton Regional Branch of Nova Scotia Association of Health Organization for 3 years; a member of the Nova Scotia Association of Health Organization Board of Directors 1978-1981 (Halifax); Chairman of the CB Regional Services Committee until her retirement in 1992; she held various other committee memberships and positions, e.g.; Administrators Committee on Implementation and Transition Teams when the 2 hospitals in Glace Bay were merged.
From 1947-1955 Jean was an instructor in the School of Nursing, Glace Bay General Hospital; 1955-1956 she was Assistant Superintendent of Nurses, Point Edward T.B. Hospital; 1956-1963 Director School of Nursing, Glace Bay General Hospital; she was appointed Administrator of the Glace Bay General Hospital on June 1, 1963 retiring on July 10, 1992.
Jean held the position of Clerk of Session (first woman at Knox United) and held this position for 3 years and a member of Session since 1979; she also served on the Christian Education Committee and Board of Stewarts at Knox United Church.
From 1947-1963 she served as President of the Cape Breton Registered Nurses in Cape Breton and the Victoria branch for 3 years; she was a member of the Board of Examiners of Registered Nurses in Nova Scotia for 10 years and served as a member of the Isle Royale Chapter I.O.D.E. since 1973, Regent from 1994 -1996 and is a lifetime member. She held the Office of Secretary for the Glace Bay General Hospital Charitable Foundation and was a member of the Glace Bay General Hospital Alumni, she also held a seat on the Board of Directors and was Vice President of the Board at the Cove Guest Home from 1995-2000.
Jean was instrumental in the planning, development and leadership of the new Glace Bay General Hospital and played an important role in the development of the Glace Bay General Hospital Charitable Foundation.
She is survived by her daughter, Morah Hemsworth and loving and loyal fur baby, Bootsie II. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Frances MacLeod; nephew, Tom MacInnes (Keri); nieces, Mary Ellen Rosnok (Mike), Judy Hemsworth-Tetford (David) and other nieces and nephews through N.S., N.B. and the US. Besides her parents she was predeceased by her husband, John in 1978 and her only brother, John in 1975.
Visitation for the Late Jean Hemsworth will be held Friday, September 2 from 6-9 p.m. at Patten Funeral, 71 Union Street, Glace Bay. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, September 3 at 11 a.m. at Knox United Church with Rev. Duncan Roach officiating. Donations may be made to Knox United Church Memorial Fund or the Glace Bay General Hospital Charitable Foundation.
