Joachim (Joe) Merten-Feddeler

Passed on: September 1st, 2016

Joachim (Joe) Merten-Feddeler passed away at home in Moose Jaw on Sept 1, 2016. Born in Poland in 1932, Joe lived a life of many careers. After WW2 he immigrated to Canada, a country suited to his ingenuity and willingness to dig in and do the job. Landing in Saskatchewan in 1952 he took up farming until wanderlust drew him westward—building grain elevators in Alberta, then logging and goldmining in BC. In BC he wrote the entrance exams for the RCMP. From 1959-79 Joe was posted to many Saskatchewan locations: Leader, Swift Current, Carlyle, Estevan, Kamsack, and Prince Albert before concluding his service in Regina. Eventually, an injury suffered on the job led to his retirement. Joe used the skills he’d learned in the RCMP to develop a training program for the Provincial Government, teaching Resource Officers how to handle rowdy campers and illegal hunters. Joe is survived by his wife, Ilonka Halsband; his daughters, Jo-Anne (Lyndon) Neher, Janette (Dave) Eastwood, Angela (Dennis) Russell; his grandchildren, Kyle Eastwood, Ali Neher, Ozzie Neher; his brother and sisters, and many nieces and nephews. The family wishes to thank the Palliative Care team who helped ease Joe through his difficult final journey. Services will be held at the RCMP Chapel in Regina at 4 pm on Sat. Sept. 24, 2016. Donations in Joe’s name may be made to “RCMP Heritage Centre” https://www.canadahelps.org/en/charities/rcmp-heritage-centre/ or to the Canadian Cancer Society. In living memory of Joe, a memorial planting will be made by W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Home. Please sign the memorial register at website: www.wjjonesandson.com (Obituaries).
