Bertha Steel

Passed on: September 18th, 2016

Bertha Steel passed away in her home on September 18, 2016. With the same strength and determination she had in life…mom passed away peacefully Sunday, September 18th, 2016. During the final days of transition, mom was surrounded by her loving family. Mom was predeceased by her parents Bertha and James Newton, brothers Jack and Ed, sister Edith Lincoln, first husband Arthur Whitehead, second husband Lyall Steel and son Edwin Whitehead. She is survived by son Lyall Steel (Isabelle), daughters Brenda Steel and Wendy (Randy) Drake, special daughter-in-law Cheryl Whitehead and “like a son” Randy Drake. Grandchildren Rhonda (Ken) McGinnis, Crystal (Pete) Bellegard, Tracey (Jeff) Closs, Alysha Brentnell, Adam and Taylor Drake. Great grandchildren: Chelsea, Shyla (Jordan), Tyler McGinnis, Kael and Ethan Brentnell, Ariane Lemire-Steel and Carline Lemire-Steel. Great-grandchildren: Jessica, Treasure, Jett (Treasure & Jett’s mom Kassy Miller), Averi and Emery. Extended family Brad (Brittany & baby Alexis), Corey and Adam McGinnis, Jane Delmage and Jennifer Lamb and their children, “special sister-in-law” Mary Steel and “brother in law” Gary Steel. Mom was born in 1922 and lived all her 93 years in Moose Jaw. She attended William Grayson and Peacock High School. She proudly worked as a secretary, notably twenty-five years at the Royal Canadian Legion office. During the “war effort” she worked at Prairie Airways. During the World War II mom lost her “high school sweetheart” husband Arthur Whitehead who left the gift of their son Edwin. Seven years later she married our dad Lyall Steel, who passed in 1990, and she inherited his ten brothers (the Steel boys) and one sister! They were included in so many Christmas dinners in our childhood! Next to her endless love of family…mom loved music and singing. Thank you mom for passing on your love of music to us!! She was devoted to the Minto Church Choir for many years and Magic Harmony and passionate about the Royal Canadian Legion. Mom loved the movies, created beautiful paper tole, photo albums and pies!! We thank her for your example of strength, determination and unconditional love. From the bottom of our hearts, we want to thank Dr. V. Rininsland and June! Our second family…all the angels at Crescent Park Villa…your love shown to mom (and to us) is unforgettable! Of course, the beautiful Palliative Care and Homecare staff! And to Cheryl Whitehead (our soul-sister)… for bringing your love and “a part of Ed” to mom each and every day. Thank you mom for your gifts of strength, determination and unconditional love. Your “song” will carry on!! A Funeral Service will be held at Minto United Church, 1036 7th Ave. NW, Moose Jaw on Friday September 23, 2016 at 11:00AM.
