MARY ALICE MACDONALD

Born In: SYDNEY
Born: December 17th, 1918

Passed on: September 21st, 2016

With saddened hearts and loving memories, we announce the passing of our cherished mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend Mary Alice MacDonald on Wednesday, Sept. 21st. Although we deeply mourn her loss, we celebrate the wonderful life she lived for 97 years.
Mary was called to our Lord’s arms, surrounded by her loving family and her angels on earth: the staff of Steelworkers Lane at Harbourstone Enhanced Care. She resided at Harbourstone for the past 9 years, having formerly lived at 12 Hospital Road, Edwardsville. She was born on Dec. 17th, 1918 in Sydney and was the daughter of the late John & Annie (MacLean) Yeo. She was a faithful adherent of Bethel Presbyterian Church. Mary worked as Personnel Manager for Canada Catering at the Point Edward Naval Base and at both the Cape Breton Hospital and the Braemore Home in the Occupational Therapy Dept. where she made many friends with both residents and staff. Left to mourn with loving memories are her children, Mary Lou (Tom) Stobbs (St. Albert, AL), John (Ruth) Arsenault (Westmount), Corinne (Kurt) Albiez (Lethbridge AL) and son-in-law Lloyd (Vicki) Chartrand (Coxheath). She will always be fondly remembered by her grandchildren, Derek, Terry, Katie, Jonnie, Mary, Mark, Jamie, Byron & their families. She was a proud great-grandmother to Carly, Ella, Ava, Jenna, Emma, Ronin, Charley London, Lily & Jude. Mary was also a kind and loving stepmother to Karen (Walter) MacKenzie and Christene (Freeman) Reynolds. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her first husband, Louis Arsenault; her second husband, Maurice MacDonald; her daughter, Valerie Chartrand and her only sister, Annabelle (Bert) Young. Mary influenced all people she encountered with many life lessons on love, kindness, compassion and determination. She always embraced life with a smile. She found positive in everyone and everything. She will continue to be an inspiration for all those who had the privilege of knowing and loving her. She was a thoughtful and caring wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, friend and neighbor. She loved her many visits from her kind neighbors. She was a very social lady and truly enjoyed the many card games and dances she attended over the years.
Mary’s family would like to acknowledge the amazing staff at Harbourstone Enhanced Care (and Steelworkers Lane in particular) for the loving care provided to her. The respect, dignity, compassion, and most of all the love they freely displayed to her is etched in our hearts forever. Thank you all so much for helping to ensure her quality of life to the very end! In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mary’s memory to the Cancer Society, Diabetes Association, or to Steelworkers Lane, Harbourstone Enhanced Care, 84 Kenwood Dr., Sydney, B1S 1T6.
