George Wiebe

Passed on: September 13th, 2016

George Wiebe of Swift Current, SK passed away unexpectedly at home, early in the morning on Tuesday, September 13, 2016. George was born on January 27, 1932 to Jacob and Katharina Wiebe at Lizard Lake, Sask., (Biggar area). He was elder brother to 5 sisters. He attended school at Wilson Lake, Sask until the family moved to Swift Current where he attended Elmwood School and graduated in 1951 from Beatty Collegiate. George met Margaret Hack from Shaunavon in 1955, and they were married on August 18th, 1956. George and Marg made their home in Swift Current where they raised their children, Randy, Pam, Sharon and Darcy. They had just celebrated their 60th anniversary. Following high school George began work at Great West Auto Electric as parts runner/shipper/parts man. In 1957 he was promoted to Manager, began buying shares and eventually became majority partner. Many employees who worked for George remained until their retirement years-friends as well as employees. Even though he was the boss, George continued to work on the counter; serving customer needs every day for the last 65 years. If you needed a part, in particular any kind of old antiquated part, George had it, much to the delight of his valued customers, many who became lifelong friends. Great West Auto Electric received the SCBEX Heritage Award in 2012. George's business legacy will be carried on by his children who worked alongside of him. George coached baseball for the boys, was a devoted hockey dad, and leader in Cubs and Scouts. He took pride as a spectator at the girls' softball games and dance and music recitals. George also enjoyed pitching for the company team in the slow pitch league. He was an active, contributing member of the Kinsmen, K-40's, and Shriners. He belonged to a poker club, and of course was a lifelong member of the Elmwood Golf club, where he had just played in the triathlon tournament the weekend before his passing. George loved playing cribbage and other games, enjoyed woodworking and was well known for his award winning Chokecherry wine. George and Marg were also season ticket holders and avid fans of the Swift Current Broncos, where you would see them together at almost every game. George and Marg were blessed to have been able to travel the world: Western Canada including the Yukon, Alaska, Hawaii, Las Vegas, and special trips to Disney World with each of their children and families. They also enjoyed Europe, Cuba, Mexico, Cayman Islands, and their trip of a lifetime-Peru, where at 80 years of age George hiked the extensive Machu Picchu ruins. In 1995 George and Marg purchased a lakefront cabin at Cypress Hills Provincial Park, which has been enjoyed by the entire family as well as friends. Many happy times have been spent there year round, including every New Years. George found it a peaceful place to golf, putter and ride his moped. George will be missed by his family, friends and all who knew him. George was predeceased by his parents, Jacob and Katharina Wiebe; one sister, Betty and her husband Don Oveson; two brothers-in-law, Gordon Kurtz and Ken Apperly and an infant granddaughter, Anne Marie Walde. George is survived by his wife of 60 years, Marg and their four children: Randy (Leanne) and their children, Brandon and Brittany (Jordan); Pam Wright (John) and their children Carmen (Chuck) and great granddaughter Keauna, and Jared; Sharon Walde (Jon) and their children Erich and Karl; and son Darcy Wiebe; sisters Tina (Syl) Kammerer, June Kurtz, MaryAnn Apperly, Shirley Stuart (Bob) and numerous nieces and nephews. The funeral service was held on Monday, Sept 19th from East Side Church of God with Pastor Kevin Snyder officiating. Tributes were given by the children, grandchildren and Don Beyer. Pallbearers were all his grandchildren, Carmen Weinknecht, Brandon Wiebe, Brittany Croswell, Jared Wright, Erich Walde and Karl Walde. Ushers were John Penny, Harry Wiebe, Vince Flaterud and Stacy Rathwell. Interment service was held at Memory Gardens. Donations may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Sick Children or The Centre in Swift Current. Warren's Funeral Home were entrusted with the arrangements.
