It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our mother, grandmother and sister, Mary Elizabeth Berube on Wednesday, September 28, 2016 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Formerly of Marathon, Ontario, Elizabeth was born in Eskasoni, the daughter of the late Mary Agnes Jeddore and Michael Francis Matthews. She trained at St. Rita’s Hospital School of Nursing and was a member of the Canadian Nurses Association, the Aboriginal Nurses of Canada, a former member of the Royal Canadian Air Force, the Catholic Women’s League and the Women of the Moose. Her gentle demeanor and commitment to family were known to all. She was an example of humour, loyalty and integrity to her children and the greater community with her work at Millbrook, Glooscap and Eskasoni Health Centers. She will be greatly missed. Elizabeth is survived by her daughters, Cheryl Lynn Berube, Carolin Ann Berube, Michelle Matthews, Lina Berube; sons, Maurice Berube, Guy Berube; her sister, Sister Veronica Matthews; grandchildren, Jason Matthews, Sean Matthews, Nicole Matthews, Guy Richard, Evangeline Berube and Philip Berube and by numerous nieces, nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews.
She was predeceased by sisters, Teresa Matthews, Martha Matthews, Catherine Stevens, Jeanette Matthews, Mary Wrobel and brothers, John William and Murray Matthews. Visitation for Elizabeth Berube will start on Thursday (today), September 29th after 7 p.m. at the Gabriel Centre, Eskasoni. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, October 1 at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Family Church with Rev. Martin MacDougall officiating. Interment in the parish cemetery.
