It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our wonderful mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend, Mary Snook, age 79. Mary peacefully passed away at her home with her loving family at her side on Tuesday, October 4, 2016.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Gordon and Sadie (Moores) Oakes and was a member of St. Mary’s Anglican Church in Glace Bay. Mary will be sadly missed by her daughters, Isabel, Mary, Marlene, Joanne; sons, Chesley (Kelly), Henry (Geri Lou), Ronnie, Tommy, Jimmy, Johnny (Suzanne); sisters, Gertie (Sonny) Mullins, Eliza (Bernie) DeCoste; brothers, Gordie and Jim (Joanne) Oakes; 17 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren that she loved dearly. She will also be sadly missed by her sisters-in-law, Susie and Viola, numerous nieces, nephews and many friends. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Henry (2002); sisters, Daisy, Gloria; brothers, Gerald, Kenny and also a brother and sister both in infancy; sister-in-law, Isabel; brothers-in-law, Steve, Tom, Bud, and Charlie.
Visitation will be held Friday, October 7, 2016 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve Street, Glace Bay.
A funeral service celebrating her life will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, October 8, 2016 at St. Mary’s Anglican Church, Glace Bay with Rev. Vernon Reid officiating. Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.
Following the interment, all are invited to meet with the family at a reception at Mary’s family home. At this time, we would like to extend a sincere thank you to the VON and Palliative Care for allowing us to fulfil Mom’s wishes of caring for her at home.
