Ernies secular work started while he was in school, he delivered groceries for Elmwood Grocers for $.10 a delivery. As a young adult he drove a gravel truck for about a year. At about 19 years of age he went to work for Borger Brothers laying pipeline. Within the first year he was made a foreman. He continued there about 9 years, then decided to work closer to home and began his career as a floor layer until his retirement .
Ernie was very much a family man and worked hard to provide a nice home for his wife and children. He loved being outdoors and enjoyed camping and taking pride in his yard. Ernie and Grace loved to have people to their home and share hospitality.
