Leona Jewell  Brown

It is with great sadness that the family of Leona Jewell Brown age 89 of Amherst announce her peaceful passing on Wednesday, October 12, 2016 with family by her side at Northumberland Hall, Amherst.
Born November 26, 1926 in River Phillip, NS, she was a daughter of the late Byron and Rachel (Powers) Matheson.
Leona will be remembered as a homemaker. She provided child care to many children in the Fort Lawrence community. Leona was a member of many community groups such as Fort Lawrence Women’s Institute, Trinity-St. Stephen’s United Church and United Church Women (UCW). She was a lifetime member of Sir Charles Tupper Home and School. She was also a volunteer with CNIB, as well as several other charities throughout her years.
She is survived by her daughter, Joanne (Eric Himmelman) Brown, Fall River, sons, Michael (Susan Noiles) Fort Lawrence, Charles (Rena), Amherst, James (Marilyn), Fort Lawrence and Daniel (Marlene), Hamilton, ON; grandchildren; great grandchildren; great great grandchildren; sisters, Ione (Bill) Edgett, Moncton, NB, Freda Dickie, Mount Pleasant, NS, Launa Dickie, Muriel Colborne both of Amherst; as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family.
Leona was predeceased by her husband Edward F. in 2006; sisters, Orisy Welton and Thelma Matheson; brothers, Ray, Cliff and Malcolm.
A time of visitation will be held on Saturday, October 15, 2016 from 1 pm until the time of the service at 2 pm all held in Campbell’s Funeral Home, 98 Church St. Amherst, 902-667-9906.
Interment will take place in Rodney Cemetery, Rodney, NS.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Leona’s memory to the Trinity-St. Stephen’s United Church.
