Margaret Anne (Margie) MacLellan

Margaret Anne (Margie) MacLellan Margaret Anne (Margie) MacLellan

Margaret Anne (Margie) MacLellan, 90, of Big Pond and Dartmouth, died September 28 at Dartmouth General Hospital after a brief illness.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the eighth of ten children of Malcolm and Christina (MacNeil) MacLean, who were fluently bilingual (Gaelic and English). Her family moved to Hay Cove, Richmond County, when she was eight years old. She later attended school in Sydney while living with her sister, Florence and graduated from Holy Angels High School in 1944. Margie's teaching career began at 19, after graduating from Provincial Normal College and spanned 35 years in three Cape Breton counties. Her working life featured two themes: rural schools and starting in the late 1950s, the series of Volkswagen Beetles that propelled her up our steep driveway in all seasons so she could get to her job. Margie moved to Big Pond Centre in 1952 after marrying Alf MacLellan and she was an active member of her church and community. She doted on her grandchildren and also made a better-than-average bannock. She lived in her own home until she was 85 and at the time of her death resided with her daughter Dolores's family in Dartmouth. Margie looked forward to returning to Big Pond each summer and while her mobility was hampered in recent years, her sense of humour and tarabish skills were undiminished. Margie is survived by sons, Ed (Elizabeth MacLeod), Halifax; Paul (Bette Yetman), Big Pond; Andy (Cheryl), Dartmouth; daughter, Dolores (Don "Kissie") Cameron, Dartmouth; grandchildren, Christy MacLellan, Liam and Anna MacLellan and Hugh and Gael Cameron; brother, Larry, Fonthill, Ont. and a good number of nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by Alf, her beloved husband of 52 years and eight brothers and sisters (Florence, Gertie, Edward, Roy, Allan, Joe, Peter and Kay Sr. Catherine).
Family flowers only, but if so desired, a donation to St. Mary's Parish or to Big Pond Community/Firehall in Margie's memory graciously accepted.
Funeral mass will be Saturday, October 22 at 2 p.m. in St. Mary's Church, Big Pond with Fr. Richard Philiposki officiating. As per Margie's wishes, visitation will be 12-2 p.m. at the church just prior to the funeral service. "Ma" will be dearly missed.
