Beverley E. Cox

Passed on: October 21st, 2016

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dear wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend, Beverley Elizabeth Cox, age 76, on Friday, October 21, 2016, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, surrounded by her loving family and wonderful palliative care nurses.
Born in Red Deer, Alberta, she was the only daughter of the late Donald and Inez (Yarbrough) Martin. Bev grew up in Alberta and spent a large portion of her life there, until she later moved to Kitimat, BC where she eventually married John and began a family. Always ready for a new adventure and with a passion for gardening, Bev started a new career at age 52, as a cashier at SuperValu in North Sydney. During the summer months, she managed the garden centre, being referred to by many as “The Flower Lady”. Bev loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She enjoyed their many trips to the beach, playing games and hosting Sunday dinners. Bev also enjoyed reading, camping, tennis, swimming and walking through her beautiful flower gardens.
Bev is survived by her loving husband of 50 years, John; by her two children, Jonathan (Karen) Cox of Sydney Forks, Cathy (Chris) MacMullin of Southside Boularderie; by her five precious grandchildren, Gavin, Marissa, Evan, Samuel and Cowan. Also surviving are her brother, Don (Dale) Martin of Port Alberni, BC, goddaughter, several nephews, nieces and many friends. Besides her parents, Bev was predeceased by three brothers, Alton, Howard and Bob. Our family would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the staff of VON, Palliative Care, EHS paramedics, C.B. Cancer Centre and Dr. Michel McKeough. Bev thought each and every one of you was, in her words, “fantastic”.
Her strength, courage and faith throughout her illness have been an inspiration to her family and friends. Visitation of Bev will be held Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A Funeral Mass will take place at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday from St. Joseph’s Church in Bras d’Or, with Rev. Peter McLeod officiating. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the An Cala Palliative Care unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital or the Cape Breton Cancer Centre.
