Kenneth Freeman Smith

Kenneth Freeman Smith, 91, of Amherst passed away suddenly on Thursday, October 20, 2016 at his home.
Born in Linden, NS, Ken was the son of the late Lamert and Cora (Hunter) Smith.
He spent his working career as a truck driver and retail salesman. He was a member of Trinity St. Stephens United Church. He and his wife Gertie enjoyed camping and traveling to many Bluegrass festivals and shows. Next to his family, playing music and the many friends he made because of it was Ken's greatest joy. He was an avid card player.
He will be dearly missed by his daughter, Marilyn (Kenny) Peters, Souris, PE; his son, Steve (Michelle McManaman), Amherst; four grandchildren, Brad (Becky) Peters, Janice (Andrew) Peters Gibson, Jennifer Peters, and Abbie Smith; five step-grandchildren, Teri, Angie, Jamie, Nickie, and Julie; one great granddaughter, Celeste Gibson; two sisters-in-law, Evelyn Smith and Elsie Wilson, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Ken was predeceased by his loving wife of 66 years, Gertrude "Gertie" Smith, who passed on October 1 of this year; infant daughter, Janice Lynn; infant grandson, Philip Peters; siblings Alice, Hugh, Herman, Reta, and Joyce.
Arrangements are under the care and guidance of Furlong~Jones Funeral Home, 70 Church Street, Amherst (902-667-8777) from where family and friends are invited to a time of visitation on Monday, October 24, 2016 from 6-8 pm. A funeral service for Ken will be held at the Furlong~Jones Funeral Home on Tuesday, October 25, 2016 at 2 pm. Interment to follow in the Amherst Cemetery.
Donations in memory of Ken may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation or charity of your choice.
