Joyce Eva Mitchell

With great sadness, we announce the passing of Joyce Eva Mitchell, Truro, on Saturday, October 29, 2016 at Elk Court in Brookfield. She was born in Amherst, the eldest child of James and Anne (Merrill) Bainbridge, on June 18, 1931. She attended Amherst Regional High School and St. Charles Commercial School and upon graduation was employed for several years by Sifto Salt Company in Nappan prior to her marriage to Donald Allan Mitchell of Truro. As newlyweds, they lived in Middle Musquodoboit where Don taught at the Regional High School before they moved to Truro in 1954. Joyce worked for many years with federal and provincial Agricultural agencies in Nova Scotia and in Alberta. She was actively involved in her community and was a member of First United Church for over 60 years, where she acted as an executive member of the UCW and as a CGIT leader. Joyce was also an Executive member of the Colchester Hospital Ladies Auxiliary, the Truro Ladies Curling Club, and was a charter member of the Truro Business Ladies Curling Club (1967). She competed in the NS Ladies Provincial Curling play downs on several occasions and in many mixed curling bonspiels. She was a member of the Colchester Chapter IODE for many years. Joyce loved “Shelties” and could often be seen on Douglas Street walking one of the family dogs. She and Don both played bridge and had nightly games of cribbage in retirement. She was an avid reader, knitter and crafter, and a Hummel figurine collector. She and Don spent their summers at the cottage at Brule Point for 40 years, and their winters in Florida for 20 years, where they attended spring training baseball games. They also travelled extensively in Canada, the US, England, Scotland, Ireland, and France. She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Don Mitchell; her daughter, Donna (Rick) Parker, Mattatall Lake; her son, David (Tracey) Mitchell, Truro; her grandsons, Jesse (Brooke), Daniel (Keely), Stephen (Karyn) Parker, and Sean (Heather) Mitchell, all of Alberta, Patrick Mitchell (Kathleen Allen), of Halifax, and Ryan Mitchell, of Truro; her brother, James (Norma) Bainbridge, of Halifax; and sister, Sharon Grocutt, of Calgary; five great-grandchildren, Nolan, Meleah, Rhett, Emily, and Blake Parker; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Jim and Anne; and her brother, Ernest Bainbridge, of Moncton. The family would like to extend their deep appreciation to the staff at Elk Court, Brookfield, for the sensitive and loving care that Joyce received during her lengthy illness. Special thanks, as well, to Anne Mitchell, Joyce’s friend and sister-in-law, for her frequent visits with Joyce during her illness. Visitation will be held 7 ~ 9 pm Wednesday, November 2, funeral service 2 pm Thursday, November 3, all in the Mattatall ~ Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro, Rev. Valerie Kingsbury officiating. Private interment in the Watson Cemetery, Truro. Family flowers only.
