Our adorable, intelligent, generous, creative, witty ‘Ma’ and ‘Nana’ and Phyl – 1923 to 2016. Phyllis Elizabeth Marie (MacLean) Brown of Cornwall, age 93 years, passed peacefully at GlenStorDun Lodge, Cornwall on Saturday, October 29, 2016. Pre-deceased by her parents, Elizabeth Morse Smith and John Hector MacLean and step-father, Dr. L. M. Curren. Alumna of Mount Allison University, Sackville N.B - BA and McGill University, Montreal QC - BLS, MLS. Beloved wife of the late Allen G. Brown; loving mother of Ian Brown and Charmian McGrath (Jerry Vanderwal); cherished grandmother of Jessica McGrath, Jessica Vanderwal and Morgan Vanderwal; Aunt of Bill Brown (Auna), Portage La Prairie, MB and Geoff Brown (Jennifer), Brampton, ON. Phyllis had a great sense of community and with it came hundreds of hours contributed to local charities and services. She loved the English language and for her, tutoring students was a rewarding endeavor. Phyllis believed one could never learn too much, and her on-going love of continuing education for herself, travel, theatre, sailing, knitting, writing poetry, playing Scrabble or bridge and reading, reading, reading, filled her hours, when not visiting with family and friends. As fate would have it, Alzheimer’s disease robbed Phyl of much of her ability to communicate, but not before she was able to instill a love of reading and learning in her children and grandchildren.
Phyllis’s captivating smile and open, welcoming, demeanor made her friends wherever she went. She will be missed by one and all.
