ATWOOD, Shirley Irene- age 87, of The Meadows Home for Special Care in Yarmouth, NS passed away on October 31st, 2016. Born in Kemptville in 1929 she was the daughter of the late Frank and Dora (Gray) Jeffery. She worked as a waitress and along with a partner owned and operated a small restaurant. Shirley worked in a candy factory and was also employed as a clerk in Yarmouth’s “Royal Store”. She worked as a weaver for nine years in Cosmos Imperial Mills and also owned and operated a used clothing consignment store. Shirley was a nature lover and loved the outdoors. An avid gardener, she took pride in growing vegetables, flowers and trees. In her early fifties she was afflicted with rheumatoid arthritis and after suffering for years with the disease, which almost crippled her, she was cured by using alternative medicine, mostly natural herbs. A member of the Pleasant Valley Baptist Church she led a Sunday School Class and was also a choir member. She loved music, especially gospel music. She formed a gospel singing group called “Shirley and Friends”, they were active in entertaining in churches and nursing homes. She also enjoyed knitting and quilt making. She loved her family dearly. She is survived by her husband Elwin Atwood; daughters, Deborah (Kenneth) Power, Heather (Fred) Peppard, Holly (Allan) Gould and Nora (Robert) Fitzsimmons; brother Alec (Olive) Jeffery and grandchildren Mike, April, Leslie and Ryan as well as 4 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Besides her parents she was predeceased by a brother in infancy and her sister Eleanor Hurlburt. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Sweeny’s Funeral Home and Crematorium, Yarmouth. Visitation took place Friday, November 4th, 2016 from 7-9 p.m. in Sweenys Funeral Home. A funeral service was held at Pleasant Valley Baptist Church on Saturday, November 5th, 2016 at 2 p.m., Rev. Mike Cannel officiated. Reception followed in church vestry. Interment followed in Lakeview Cemetery in Kemptville. Family flowers only please. Donations in memory may be made to the Pleasant Valley Baptist Church.
