Thelma Rita Horechuk (MacIsaac)

Born: October 4th, 1959

Passed on: November 10th, 2016

It is with broken hearts we announce the passing of Thelma Rita (MacIsaac) Horechuk at age 57 after a brief, but courageous battle with cancer on November 10, 2016. Thelma was born on October 4, 1959 to the late Mary Ann and Stephen MacIsaac, Leitches Creek. Thelma lived in Leitches Creek until she graduated from St. Martha's School of Nursing in 1985. Following graduation she accepted a nursing job at Camp Hill Hospital. While working in Halifax, she met and married her husband, Steve Horechuk. The next chapter of her life found herself and Steve in Mississauga, Ontario where she accepted a position working at Toronto General Hospital. This chapter turned out to be a very exciting time, the light of her life was born, a beautiful baby girl named Marika. For the next 4 years Mississauga continued to be home. In 1997 a new chapter was written. This chapter takes place back in Halifax where Thelma spent 19 years working at the Victoria General Hospital. From there she continued her career at the VG Cancer Clinic taking care of patients with professionalism and love. Thelma worked right up to the day before she was diagnosed with the same disease she helped so many others battle.
June 7, 2016 began the last chapter of her life story. This chapter showed us, her family, what a true hero she was as she faced her terminal illness. Through chemo and radiation there was never a complaint. She showed strength that we can only hope we have in our time of need.
Many summers were spent travelling the road from Halifax to Margaree which she referred to as ‘Her Happy Place’. This summer every second weekend was spent in her ‘Happy Place’, her trailer, located in ‘The Homeland’ of her brother, Mike and his wife, Anne Marie. These weekends allowed us to make many happy memories that Thelma took on her next journey and ones we will treasure for the rest of our lives.
Thelma will be missed greatly by her husband and best friend, Steve Horechuk; her pride and joy, her daughter, Marika. She will be remembered fondly by her brothers and sisters, Malcolm (Brenda), North Sydney, Margie Wells (Harold), Millie MacIsaac, Mike (Anne Marie), Leitches Creek, Reggie (Nancy), Westmount, Cameron (Joan), Leitches Creek, Wayne (Joanne), Beaver Cove, Angus (Vanda), Florence, Theresa Halliday (Blair), Sydney Mines, Yvonne Hall (Glen), Karen MacIsaac, Leitches Creek. Also left to miss Thelma are her in-laws, Stella and Nick Horechuk, sister-in-laws, Chrissie MacNeil (Bruce), Halifax, Marie, Sydney and brother-in-law, Michael (Piney), Sydney. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews who she loved with all her heart and soul, Jamie, Steven (Michelle), Carolyn (Kevin), Steve (Adrienne), Laura (Pat), Chris (Natalie), Daniel (Vicky), Melissa, Catherine (Jeremy), Matthew (Nicole), Jennie (Ken), Joshua (Rachael), Seamus, Zachary, Jacklyn (Ben), Michael, her Godson, Jeffery (Kristy) and Mary Ann, Marley (Chris), Nicole, her Godson Thomas, Jake, Bailey and Nicholas. As the pages of her book close and her work is done here, she will be pain free and celebrating a reunion with family and friends she has not seen in a long time. Thelma has left instructions for her husband, daughter, her family and to everyone who reads this: never stop doing random acts of kindness for others. Our family circle is minus a huge link in our chain, a link we will miss at every family gathering. We will share many tears but also share much laughter of the beautiful memories made. We want to let her know she did a great job and wish her a safe journey. We will remember her smile, her warmth, her energy, her love for her family and friends and her organization of our annual summer family gathering in Margaree. She worked very hard in her life, up until the very end. She made a difference in the lives of many. There are many angels that walk among us and Thelma had some angels along with her family to help her along her journey. Her friends and coworkers at the Cancer Clinic, especially Jill, Darlene, Lynn, Dr. Bruce Colwell and Barb, her palliative care nurse, who went above and beyond to care for her. Her friends Dwayne and Doris who were always just a phone call away. To each and every one who travelled this journey with Thelma: Thank You.
