Kenneth Wilson

Passed on: November 3rd, 2016

Kenneth Bruce Wilson, August 17, 1921 - November 3, 2016: proud Canadian, stubborn New Zealander, fearless jack-of-all trades and global adventurer, Kenneth "Newzy" Bruce Wilson stamped the last page in his global passport on November 3, 2016. Ken was born in Wellington, New Zealand, on August 17, 1921, eldest child of Harry and Sybil Wilson. After 16 years of idyllic seaside life, Harry and Sybil packed up Ken and his three siblings and relocated to England. Not wanting to be a burden on his family, Ken took the Royal Air Force (RAF) entrance exam at the age of 16 and was accepted, knowing he had to commit for 12 years. On June 9, 1938, Ken enlisted and became part of the No2 Aircraft Apprentice Wing. Due to WWII breaking out, he completed his training in 2 years instead of 3, and was transferred to a bomber squadron in Feltwell, Lincolnshire, to maintain Wellington Bombers and Spitfires. After being promoted to Leading Aircraft Mechanic Aviation technician, he was transferred to Canada in April of 1941, sailing to Halifax aboard the Niew Amsterdam. From Halifax, he rode the train through Swift Current enroute to the No. 37 Service Flying Training School in Calgary, where he was promoted to Corporal. He married Lynne Knowles in 1943, and their son, Gary, was born February 22, 1944. Less than 6 months later, he was transferred back to England and then Poona, India, in August of 1945, and was responsible for airdropping supplies to troops in Burma as well as flying Indian Army Paratroops. After being promoted to Sergeant, he was put in charge of the parachute section, packing and repacking parachutes on the base. In 1946 he was promoted to Tech Sergeant, and was responsible for maintain Lord Louis Mountbatten of Burma's aircraft. Following his stint in India, he returned to England on August 27, 1948, where he purchased his release from the RAF for _25. After obtaining passage to Canada on the Aquatania, he travelled to Calgary where he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) on September 19, 1948. Divorced in 1950, he left Calgary for Medicine Hat in 1951, where he was based at Suffield Experimental Station and promoted to Corporal. During this time, he met Mary Schriver (nee Dunmire), from Gull Lake, who happened to be working in Calgary. They married June 30, 1951. In 1956, Ken and Mary were transferred to Ottawa, where Ken was involved in purchasing the serving equipment for the ill fated Avro Arrow. In 1962, Ken and Mary were transferred again to No2 Fighter Wing, Grostenquin, France. Their time in France allowed Ken and Mary to travel all over Europe in their VW Microbus as well as square dance at other allied bases, where Ken was a sought after caller. In 1966, they said their goodbyes to France and returned to Moose Jaw where Ken took a course on the Avro Tutor (Snowbirds aircraft). Ken was released from the service on July 31, 1971, at age 50, after 31 years of service. Following his release, Ken and Mary moved to Saskatoon, where Ken worked at Bristol Aerospace as an inspector. In 1982, the Bristol site was closed, so Ken took a job at Kalair. In 1983, Mary retired from Woolworth's at age 75, prompting the move to Gull Lake to be closer to Mary's daughter, Lorraine and her family. Once in Gull Lake, they continued to square dance and resumed their love of RV travel, driving all over the US and Canada until Mary passed away in 2004. Ken and Mary also travelled back to New Zealand with Mary's daughter, Lorraine, and her husband, Dean. In 2014, Ken moved to The Bentley in Swift Current, where he enjoyed spending time with Lorraine, Dean and their family. He was predeceased by his parents, Harry and Sybil; his siblings, Mollie, Colin and Max and their spouses; his first wife, Lynne; his second wife, Mary; his daughter-in-law, Pat Wilson; and his grandson, Michael Mortensen. He is survived by his son, Gary (Kathy) and their children, Terry, Leslie (Rob), Scott, Emma and Robbie; step-daughter, Lorraine (Dean) and their children, Rick, Randy (Paige), Ted (Tanya) and their families; grandson, Reggie (Anita) and family; step-granddaughter-in-law, Linda (Dave); and nieces, Ngaire and Pam in New Zealand. The funeral service was held at Warren's Funeral Chapel on Wednesday, November 16 at 2:00 p.m. with a luncheon to follow at St. Stephen's Anglican Church. In memory of Ken, donations to Gull Lake Legion Branch #119, P.O. Box 637, Gull Lake SK S0N 1A0, would be appreciated by the family. Warren's Funeral Home was entrusted with the arrangements.
